Having a comprehensive public relations plan is one way to ensure effective communication in the school and outside of the school. The plan should never be considered as a final document, but should be revised and adapted as needed. This paper will outline a comprehensive public relations plan for my school. The plan will consist of a rationale, objectives, ideas to promote school relations both internally and externally, and give ways to communicate about crisis, special programs, and issues of interest. It will also include a calendar of school events for the internal public as well as the external public.

Every year administrators spend more time dealing with people. Effective communication helps build the public’s confidence in the school. Schools that have effective communication with parents and the community have increased student engagement and academic achievement (Kraft, Dougherty, 2013). With communication being an important part of our lives, it is important to have a plan to guide communication. A public relations plan allows effective communication with parents, the community, students, and staff. If there is no plan, little communication will happen (Moore, Bagin, Gallagher, 2016). Public relations plans help everyone be prepared and know their responsibilities in different situations. This is helpful, especially in times of crisis, dealing with the media, or communicating school events with the community. Effective communication also helps improve staff relations and morale. Strategic Plan The following are strategies that will be used to promote school relations both internally and externally.
• Distribute a weekly school newsletter
• Update school website and social media accounts daily
• Utilize call out system to notify parents of emergency situations, school activities, and any other information that needs to be communicated to parents
• Submit positive school stories to the media regularly
• Host community events that give the public an opportunity to come into the school
• Form a committee to work on school public relations
• Provide opportunities for the community to be involved in school business
• Involve the staff in making decision about school business
• Develop personal learning communities
• Provide parenting support
• Survey community members to determine attitudes and opinions of the school
• Provide opportunities for those in the community, without school aged children, to be involved in the school
• Train all staff in public relations
• Publically recognize students and staff for accomplishments
• Respond to parents and community members questions in a timely manner
