Asteroid impact, a recurring fear of many, though technically* impossible. To initially clarify Asteroids and meteorites aren’t the same; an asteroid is small body orbiting the sun, whereas a meteor enters the Earth’s atmosphere and a meteorite strikes the surface.
However, a meteor impact is a very common occurrence; but it is extremely rare for significantly sized impacts to occur. On average; there is a 1mm diameter meteorite impact every 30 seconds, a 1 meter diameter object every year, 100 meter diameter object every 10,000 and 10km diameter object every 100,000,000 years (Nelson 2014).
*It really is technicality. and ‘asteroid impact’ can be both technically correct or incorrect dependant on circumstance.

Avalanches kill back country recreationalists every year, including skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers, and snowmachiners. All back country users should have knowledge of the basic physics of avalanches to help them evaluate local and regional potential for slides. The foundation of this knowledge comes from understanding how the surrounding environmental conditions in previous weeks, previous days, and the day in question all contribute to snow stability or instability, and how specific factors affect snow on a micro-scale, which determines how snow slopes will behave on a macro-scale. There are two major types of avalanches (excluding debris avalanches from broken cornices and ice formations). These are point releases, or loose snow slides, and slab avalanches. While point releases can be dangerous and should be avoided, slab avalanches are much more catastrophic and account for most of the backcountry avalanche disasters involving humans. Basic physics of point releases are discussed here, followed by a discussion on the basic physics of slab avalanches, and how external factors contribute to the stability or instability of a snow covered slope.
“The term ‘explode’ hardly does this event justice…” (pge 7) Yes this short but unsettling story “Chixculub” by T. Coraghessan Boyle starts out by talking about a comet. Throughout the story, it switches between the comet, and family that gets a disturbing call in the middle of the night. As the story continues, the comet and the downcast family become closely relatable by the end. As the Chixculub comet gets closer to earth, the family’s daughter hits closer to their heart as they find out she got in a terrible accident. Consequently talking about comets, something in this story that sticks out to me was that things hit harder than one may think.

It can also be hit by a car going in the opposite direction. The magnitude of this collision will be much greater because it involves objects going in opposing directions. Also, 2.4 seconds after impact, a small fireball with a temperature of 5000'C would sweep across long island. A land fall strike would cause total divistation. The asteroid would create a earth trembling impact causing earth quakes around the world. The binding flash will show impact and the crater would be twenty miles across. Then, a blanket of dust and debris would blanket the earth and block the sun's light. This would occur for hundreds of years and the climate would be disrupted. Global killer no matter where it hits. The end of the world is only 28 years, 10 months, 19 days, 1 hour, 45 minutes, and 39 seconds away. An asteroid named XF11 is on route to hit earth directly. When it comes to cars, there are plenty of safety features incorporated by manufactures to ensure a smooth and safe ride. Some of these features seat belts, airbags, and antilock brakes. Nowadays, there have been great improvements to technology within cars to aid in the avoidance of collisions altogether. Examples of these technologies include blind spot detection, backup cameras, 360-degree cameras, and autonomous driving. Many of these newer safety features are there to avoid collisions. However, whenever a collision does occur, there is not much there to protect passengers in the rear of the car. Looking into this, there is evidence that shows that rear passengers do obtain injuries in collisions and pose the threat of contributing to others injuries. So, why are rear passenger airbags not standard in your vehicle?
