Tragedy, romance, violence, feuds, lies, death, these are the characteristics of the timeless play Romeo and Juliet. To most it is a tragic story, about two star-crossed lovers whose destiny was set from the beginning and to others it’s simply two kids who made all the bad decisions. So what can one get from this tale of two lovers? Well there are many universal themes explored in Romeo and Juliet. Some as simple as ignorance or as complicated as love. Hate and youth being other themes.
Love is the most complicated theme in the play. It deals with not just love in general but something deeper, something true. Romeo and Juliet have unconditional love towards each other, they were so in love that they were willing to die for one another. One major things was love is superior to all other things. All though Romeo and Juliet have to be loyal to their families they go behind their backs, and disobey them by being together.

Love and hate is a struggle. It needs a balance in the world, a balance in people’s lives. A balance like yin and yang, day and night. It’s necessary for people to live a prosperous and happy life. Love and hate are both strong emotions that can cause harm to people but once the bad is overcome the outcome is beautiful. This unbalance is one of many things that led up to Romeo and Juliet’s down fall.
All these themes teach us what makes Romeo and Juliet such a classic tragic play. They help us to better understand the two main characters and their love story, as well as the hardships, and obstacles they have to overcome in order to be together.
