Freud’s psychoanalytical approach attributes peoples thoughts and actions to our unconscious motives, which consists of the id, ego, and superego. Part of the psychoanalytical approach is the psychosexual stages. The psychosexual stages were also developed by Sigmund Freud, these are the childhood stages of development which are based on our id’s pleasure-seeking energies focusing on erogenous zones. Erogenous zones are distinct pleasure-sensitive areas on the body. These stages consist of the oral (0-18 months), anal (18-36 months), phallic (3-6 years), latency (6-puberty), and genital (puberty on). One social-cognitive theorist named Albert Bandura came up with the concept of reciprocal determinism. Reciprocal determinism is the influence of behavior, internal cognition, and environment all interacting. Bandura would say that my my behavior of playing a lot of sports are attributed to the fact that all my friends play sports and since I get acceptance from my friends for playing sports that my internal cognition is that I enjoy playing sports. Another concept would be Martin Seligman’s optimism versus pessimism. Optimism versus pessimism shows a person’s personal control which is the way we learn to see ourselves as controlling of or controlled by our environment. Seligman would say I am more optimistic than I am pessimistic because I dont always expect the worse which results in me trying more things because I am not afraid of failure but I am not so optimistic that I am overconfident in my abilities or that I overlook possible risks within my decisions. Seligman would see this within my collage because I try a lot of different foods and drinks and I also do a lot of adventurous things such as parasailing and atving. Annie, a fifth-grade student in Mr. Keller's class, is being quiet and sullen for the fifth day in a row. "I just can't do this writing stuff," she finally says in an appeal to Mr. Keller. "I'm not a good student. Give me P.E. or art over this stuff any day!" If we apply Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory in her comment "I just can't do this writing stuff" how does Bandura's theory help us to understand Annie? According, the Social Cognitive Theory of Albert Bandura which combines both behavioral and cognitive philosophies to form his theory of modeling, or observational learning states that human personality is an interaction between the environment and a person's psychological processes. With this interaction humans are able to control their behavior through a process known as self-regulation (Woolfolk, 2013, p. 400). He also assures that some factors like environment and personal experiences can encourage behaviors such as Annie, why? Because, in her case, it seems that Annie’s school achievement and personal interest in writing are not interacting; in addition, Annie may lack of motivation and reinforcement in her life that can be the cause of her frustration in writing. Consequently, she prefers school subjects like PE or art that she thinks, she will be successful. Woolfolk (2013) says that humans “may acquire a new skill or behavior through observation, but we may not perform that behavior until there is some motivation or incentive to do so” (p. 402). Therefore, the lack of motivation, feedback, modeling, and effort can be a few reasons why Annie seems to discourage about her writing skills.
Although Freud’s Psychosexual Development is not highly used in today’s society, it was thought to be highly educated and knowledgeable when Freud first introduced this theory. Psychosexual development is biological and the predictor of the occurrence of certain behaviours. There are a total of five stages in psychosexual development including: oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital. Proper development should occur unless individuals suffer from traumatic experiences that prevent the libidinal energy from being satisfied. Libidinal energy stems from sexual impulses. If the individual happens to suffer a traumatic experience at a specific stage they become fixated in that stage. Once an individual becomes fixated at a certain stage they develop certain character types that are the result of their fixation (Ryckman, 2013). Monica Geller-Bing, a character from the popular television series F.r.i.e.n.d.s. is fixated in the anal stage of Freud’s psychosexual development. Freud’s stages begin with the oral stage. Freud begins with the oral stage because when a baby is born they experience life through their mouth. All pleasure originates from the mouth. Freud’s developmental theory continued with the anal phase, in which children begin to learn to control their bodily functions. The center of this stage is learning to control when and where to use the restroom.

Through case study, the psychodynamic approach was developed by Sigmund Freud. Freud visited Charcot’s, a laboratory in Paris investigating people suffering from hysteria. There, Freud began patient case studies (Crain, p. 254). Freud developed 5 stages of human development known as the Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency and Genital stages. The Oral stage is from the ages of birth to 18 months. This stage engages in oral activities such as sucking. Next the Anal stage begins around age 18 months to 3 years of age. Freud suggests that during the Anal stage a child focuses on the pleasure of purging from the rectal area. The Phallic stages, none as the masturbation stage, when a child get’s pleasure from focusing on his genital areas usually happens during ages 3 years to 6 years of age. After the Phallic stage come the Latency stages. Latency is when children at the ages of 6 to 12 years old work to develop cognitive and interpersonal skills suppressing sexual interests but those 12 years and older fall into the Genital stages. During the Genital stage those suppressed sexual interests re-occur and the need to find gratification dependent on finding a partner (Craig & Dunn, p 12)

The theory does a good job at delineating the stages of psychosexual development; our childhood has a great influence on our personalities. Referring to Freud’s ‘psychosexual stages’, it is very clear that parents’ role in an infant’s life is the foremost step to structure the personality. Not to forget, the oral and anal stages are focal fundamental to character traits in a person’s behavior. The inner ‘instincts’ of sexuality and aggression meeting with the socially acceptable norms creates a conflict zone, wherein it is decided what we are to do and what we would become.
