Freud’s psychoanalytical approach attributes peoples thoughts and actions to our unconscious motives, which consists of the id, ego, and superego. Part of the psychoanalytical approach is the psychosexual stages. The psychosexual stages were also developed by Sigmund Freud, these are the childhood stages of development which are based on our id’s pleasure-seeking energies focusing on erogenous zones. Erogenous zones are distinct pleasure-sensitive areas on the body. These stages consist of the oral (0-18 months), anal (18-36 months), phallic (3-6 years), latency (6-puberty), and genital (puberty on). One social-cognitive theorist named Albert Bandura came up with the concept of reciprocal determinism. Reciprocal determinism is the influence of behavior, internal cognition, and environment all interacting. Bandura would say that my my behavior of playing a lot of sports are attributed to the fact that all my friends play sports and since I get acceptance from my friends for playing sports that my internal cognition is that I enjoy playing sports. Another concept would be Martin Seligman’s optimism versus pessimism. Optimism versus pessimism shows a person’s personal control which is the way we learn to see ourselves as controlling of or controlled by our environment. Seligman would say I am more optimistic than I am pessimistic because I dont always expect the worse which results in me trying more things because I am not afraid of failure but I am not so optimistic that I am overconfident in my abilities or that I overlook possible risks within my decisions. Seligman would see this within my collage because I try a lot of different foods and drinks and I also do a lot of adventurous things such as parasailing and atving.
