When looking back at the United States in the mid-1800s, it is important to look at two of the most important writers of the time: Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. While their works have different audiences, intentions, and styles, they both reflect on one of the most important and distinct aspects of the time period: the conflict over what to do with slavery. In the case of Abraham Lincoln, this was a very political issue.
