Two Destructive Hurricanes A hurricane is a violent wind that brings water with it and can destroy just about anything in it’s path. Both in New Orleans and Houston, the damage was devastating. In a short period of time homes were flooded and the peoples’ lives were endangered. Through rain damage, flooding, and high wind gusts, they were faced with some extreme challenges. Overall, both Hurricane Harvey and Katrina experienced a lot of similar catastrophes but, there were some marked differences in there effects. Hurricane Katrina was very devastating and ended up leaving 1,833 people without their lives. It was also “350 miles across and produced high storm surges” which is why it was so incredibly powerful. (Dewan) Because of the strength of this storm, it was labeled as a category 5, the highest a hurricane can be labeled. By the time it hit, Katrina lessened in it’s category; however, within the first twenty four hours there were twenty eight levees reporting failure. (Dewan) There was only 10 inches of rain recorded which made this storm more based on wind. Lastly, the Mayor of New Orleans ordered an evacuation a day before the storm possibly saving lives. …show more content…

A life is still a very precious thing but comparing to 1,833 that is a very big difference. Harvey was also a category four hurricane. It was “200 miles across and was downgraded by flooding and rain” that ended up lasting for several days. (Dewan) This storm was a more rain and flood based storm rather than a wind storm. There was reported up to fifty inches of rainfall and a vast majority of people in Houston had to evacuate by boat because of the floods. (Danner) Although this was a huge storm, the “Mayor told people to stay put” and for this reason several people were stranded.
