Society’s Clay Para 1 What qualifies both Batman and Beowulf as a hero is their bravery in the face of evil in defeating the foes. As they stand unfazed in battle against their enemies, they prove to be well above the average. While wearing no armor and using no weapons, Beowulf faced a monster that had slaughtered men for nearly a decade and brought it to its doom. In a society where being a warrior is key, Beowulf proves to be extraordinary as his skill in battle knows nearly no bounds. Batman faces a variety of enemies, such as the Joker, and often has near death experiences in his encounters. He often is left in sticky situations in which most people would fold under the pressure. What sets Beowulf and Batman apart are the cultures they are found within and shaped by. The Anglo-Saxic society took pride in their warriors and in the action of battle. This shapes Beowulf into being a legendary fighter. This also pushes Beowulf more towards the barbaric side of the spectrum since the Anglos do not value an intellectual over a warrior. He holds pride in his feats above all else and boasts in a society where that behavior is encouraged. The reason some people today do not understand what exactly makes Beowulf so special is because we do not live in an Anglo-Saxon warrior culture. It is safe to assume that a citizen today is more afraid of being shot than being attacked by a mythical creature. Our modern society does not idealize warrior skills.
