Deranged Love
Can someone who is mentally ill truly love someone? If so, then how do they love? Is it different than how a sane person loves? I believe people who are disturbed can love another person, although it is not in the way people want to be loved. Someone who is suffering from mental illness or are mentally disturbed love in a way of obsession. They love so much that they are not able to let go of their loved ones and become deranged when they lose them. Short stories, “A Rose For Emily” by William Faulkner and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” by Raymond Carver, demonstrate how someone who is disturbed can love another.

The short story is about two couples drinking and arguing about what love truly is. One of the couples, Terri and Mel, argue about Terri’s ex, Ed. Mel does not think that Terri’s ex truly loved her, but she does. For example, Mel said, “My God, don’t be silly. That’s not love, and you know it,” (412) in response to Terri saying that Ed loved her very much. The characters Ed and Emily are both disturbed people who cannot bear to lose the person they love. In conclusion to losing their loved ones they decide upon murder, although Ed does not kill his ex Terri he does threaten to do so. Emily murders her lover to keep him from ever leaving her side. Ed threatens to kill his ex in order to scare her into staying, but when that does not work he kills himself, not being able to live without her. Both characters show signs of possibly having mental illness or just simply being unstable. One example of this is in “A Rose For Emily”, in paragraphs 26-28 it talk about how Emily would not let the town’s people bury her father. It says, “She told them that her father was not dead” (406). Emily was clearly not capable of dealing with the death of her father, she did not want to let him go. Another example of how the characters display being unstable is in, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”. In this short story is says, “Terri said the man she lived with before Mel loved her so much he tried to kill her. Then Terri said, ‘He beat me up one night. He dragged me around the living room by my ankles. He kept saying, ‘I love you, I love you, you bitch’” (411) The characters from both of the short stories showed signs of how they were incapable of dealing with
In “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner both main characters are portrayed as irrational and are isolated from reality. The narrator in “The Tell-Tale Heart” murders an elderly man, as he is fearful of the man’s eye. Emily Grierson in “A Rose for Emily” lives secluded from society, until she marries a man, Homer. She ultimately kills Homer in his bed and leaves his body to decompose for many years. Both the narrator in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” and Emily Grierson in William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” deny reality so vehemently that they isolate themselves from reality. Their isolation and denial of reality cause both to commit murder.
Some readers might find the title of Faulkner’s story, “A Rose for Emily,” ironic. As a Symbol, the rose usually signifies romantic love. Assuming that Faulkner is well aware of a rose’s symbolic meanings, why does he wish to name his story about a doomed and perverse love affair? Faulkner causes the reader to believe this is a classic love story. Faulkner then overturns the reader’s expectations by offering an unconventional heroine. Generally love stories involve a young woman, pure and beautiful, worthy of receiving love. In this story, however, the heroine is old and decrepit. Emily is introduced first at her funeral where everyone from the town has come to pay respects. Emily then is described as “a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town”. (Faulkner 681) This meaning that the townspeople viewed her as more of a monument to the town that has been there for as long as they can remember and won’t be moved. Emily throughout the whole story is criticized for the way that she thinks she is more important than everyone else, but it takes a society to judge a person at the top in order for there to be any social ladder. When Emily meets Homer she again is criticized for being seen with someone who comes from a lower part of society, but she is also being criticized for thinking she is better than everyone else. His feelings of animosity and venomous hatred for his ex-wife are in direct conflict with his original self- evaluation of both being capable of understanding, and engaging in that enigma known as true love. Mel is, in many cases, the Ed to his ex-wife. Whereas Ed engaged in the violent act of dragging Terri throughout the apartment by her ankles, Mel describes, with almost childlike delight, how he has fantasized about playing the starring role in her murder. Mel does not seem like the type of man who would commit such a deed. He does, however, consider how good it would feel to seek revenge against Marjorie in retaliation for her “crimes” against his heart. The human mind is a fragile thing. It can be both strengthen and broken down easily. Actions and even words can be the thing to kill a person mentally. Physically harming or locking away a person can lead to mental and bodily withdrawal. Harming a person with words can leave lasting effects and always stay within a person's psyche. Oppressing and locking away a person's true nature or desires can cause someone to act in way that he or she has never behaved before. When done by a loved one, it can affect a person even more. In William Faulkner's “A Rose for Emily” and Susan Glaspell's “Trifles”, two different women are kept mentally and physically locked away by a person who is supposed to love and protect them. Though Emily and Mrs. Wright had different situations, each one mentally broke. Both women took all they could before they decided that they had had enough and took matters into their own hand.

In “A Rose for Emily”, Charles Faulkner used a series of flashbacks and foreshadowing to tell Miss Emily’s story. Miss Emily is an interesting character, to say the least. In such a short story of her life, as told from the prospective of a townsperson, who had been nearly eighty as Miss Emily had been, in order to tell the story from their own perspective. Faulkner set up the story in Mississippi, in a world he knew of in his own lifetime. Inspired by a southern outlook that had been touched by the Civil War memory, the touch of what we would now look at as racism, gives the southern aroma of the period. It sets up Miss Emily’s southern belle status and social standing she had been born into, loner or not.

Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" is about an aristocratic woman who lived a very secretive and unusual life. Miss Emily had always been very sheltered by her father. He was the only man in her life and after his death, her behavior became even more unnatural. However her father's death cannot be seen as the only cause of Miss Emily's insanity. Miss Emily's behavior was also influenced by her own expectations of herself, the townspeople's lack of authority over her, and her neighbor's infatuation with her.
Terri considers that what Ed felt for her was love. And then Terri continues with her story. He stalks Mel and Terri, at that time Mel was divorcing his ex wife and living together with Terri. It’s a really complicated situation. Ed gains knowledge of the truth and kills himself with rat poison, but it doesn’t work well at first, finally he kills himself by shooting himself in his mouth.
Imagine you were the rose trying to grow in concrete; would you have made it out or die trying or maybe you just gave up. So think about it, what would you have really done? The poem “The Rose that Grew from Concrete” is about a rose that grew in concrete a metaphor that shows that you have to get past your problems to succeed. In “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “Landlady” by Roald Dahl, both authors create stories that are largely symbolic and similar in many ways. Faulkner and Dahl have somewhat similar writing styles, and both of their stories are centered on death. Although several themes occur in both, death is the one that they share in common the most. Dahl focuses on how hard it is to lose people with his inclusion of the landlady who preserves old bodies and Faulkner focuses on this theme in the form of Emily keeping dead people in her house. After being the only man in her life Emily’s father dies and she finds it hard to let go. Like her father Emily possesses a stubborn outlook towards life, and she refused to change. While having this attitude about life Emily practically secluded herself from society for the remainder of her life. She was alone for the very first time and her reaction to this situation was solitude.
