Common Core State Standards Initiative The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative has been a controversy topic from the time it was developed and implemented in 2010 to present, even though several states implemented the initiative. Common Core State Standard Initiative is the process of expanding on the existing state standards without starting from scratch, to prepare the students starting in the early grades, which provide teachers the opportunity and time to teach them and give students the necessary opportunity to master them. While some believe the common core state standards are an excellent initiative to prepare students for college –and career ready and improve students’ school achievement, because the requirements of the CCSS; whereas, some feel strongly that common core state standards does not prepare students for college –and career ready, that the needs is for quality teaching, not common standards, to improve students’ school achievement. As stated by Conley, “The common core state standards “organize and sequence content in ways that leads to all students being college and career ready, and they do so by focusing on key content and by setting high expectations” (2014). Such as, the first part of the CCSS included drafting College and Career Ready (CCAR) Standards in English language arts and mathematics. The participants in getting this done were the CCSSO and NGA as the leaders and coordinators, the College Board, ACT and Achieve. In addition, they had the support from the National Education Association (NEA), the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and the National Council of Teachers English (NCTE) that came together and put forth great effort to make Common Core State Standards in existence today.
