Under the immensity of the old-growth trees and the persistently precipitating sky, my place of contentment can be found. It is a place for arthropod finders, weather predictors, deer watchers, rain pants and the occasionally educational Star Wars discussion. This place might just look like a couple dozen cabins and a dinning hall, but Outdoor School is so much more than that.
Camp Howard Outdoor School is located in the Douglas fir forest of Corbett, Oregon. It is a program that offers a week of outdoor education to sixth grade classes. While the sixth graders engage in a week of hands on learning, the program is offered to high school students as well. We have the opportunity to go out to these woodland campsites and teach the lessons. While not everyone is a fan of living in cabins of snoring twelve year-olds, and trying to guide them through the forest during torrential rain pours, I love it. As a child going outside was something that excited you. The freedom of running through the grass or climbing the trees was something that always excited you. As times change and technology improves going outside is not a happy thought anymore. In John Stilgoe’s Outside Lies Magic and Rachel Carson’s The Sense of Wonder, they both discuss the feelings you get while going outside and the importance why we should go outside. Though both have different reasons why we should both books are relevant to today.
“When schools, parents, families, and communities work together to support learning, students tend to earn higher grades, attend school more regularly, stay in school longer, and enroll in higher level programs.” (Van Roeckel, 2008, p. 1) Deer Valley High School in Glendale, AZ is the first high school built in the Deer Valley Unified Scholl District, and with a population around 1800 students, the high school is one of the bigger schools in the state. It has a tradition of family on its’ campus, where there are still teachers teaching that were there when the school opened in 1980. A number of former students have become new teachers on campus and just about all the teachers’ children have attended and graduated from the campus. With a school like ours, there are many connections to the community around it and it is demonstrated by the programs that bring in parent and community to help with the development of our students. There are numerous booster clubs run on our campus to help support student achievement on the sports fields, a school to work programs to teach the students necessary skills in different areas of either nursing, sports medicine classes, and in the culinary arts classrooms, and funding to our school to help ensure all students graduate on time. There are many programs on our campus, but I will discuss four of the programs: baseball booster club, C2G program, “school-to-work”, and the special education program sponsored by Arrowhead Hospital. These programs are designed to improve the relationships between the campus and the people in the community, and give all students on campus every opportunity to succeed in their future.
The summer camping season peaks with five summer day camp opportunities, up from three in 2010. Day camps offered an affordable but quality learning environment for younger youth. Each year Kanawha County provides two residential camps serving roughly 160 youth. The number of residential campers increased from 150 in 2010 to 164 in 2013. Continued efforts to provide quality programming through community partners such as afterschool providers, schools, and youth-serving organizations provide fruitful results. 4-H community clubs continue to see slow but diverse growth as there are three specialty clubs and five traditional clubs. Science programming is provided weekly at three afterschool programs; nutrition education is provided at twenty elementary schools yearly; two Energy Express sites served 40 youth; Heath Rocks! was integrated into camping, schools, outdoor classroom, and afterschool programming; and the Choose to Change research project began its third year.
I’m currently enrolled in Montgomery College, located in Maryland. Montgomery College is a community college. Community colleges are different in comparison to four-year universities. I had a choice of either getting a job or going to college. There are many reasons why I choose to go to Montgomery College. I chose to go to college because I want to pursue a degree in Psychology. When choosing a college, there are a lot of decisions to make and you have to choose what’s best in your interest. In today’s society, community colleges take up a lot of the students going to pursue their education. President Obama has proposed to make all community colleges free for all Americans and I agree with this statement. People have different perspectives
Family vacations, pool memberships, and corn de-tasseling; these have been the experiences of traditional Midwestern summers. For centuries young American children have attended school during the winter months, during farming off seasons when their families could afford to be without them. Families have grown accustomed to a traditional school calendar that provides time for bonding throughout the year. Students have grown accustomed to an eight week break during the summer months where they are allowed to refresh their minds before returning for a new school year. Unfortunately, these traditional experiences and practices are now in jeopardy. In today’s race to improve student achievement, traditional school calendars have become a point of contention. Today more and more school districts and parents alike have begun to debate the pros and cons of an alternative school calendar.

I never wanted to leave. I truly thought my life was ending on that August day in 2010 as the Peter Pan bus pulled off the dirt bumpy road in New Hampshire on its trek back to the Bloomingdales parking lot in Connecticut. The night before, I stood on the shore of New Found Lake looking out at the horizon on my last night, arm and arm with my sisters, tears streaming down our faces as our beloved director quoted, "You never really leave a place you love; part of it you take with you, leaving a part of yourself behind." Throughout the years, I have taken so much of what I learned those seven summers with me. I can undoubtedly say that Camp Wicosuta is the happiest place on earth; my second and most memorable home. Camp was more than just fun even as I smile recalling every campfire, color-war competition, and bunk bonding activity I participated in. It was an opportunity to learn, be independent, apart of an integral community, and thrive in a new and safe environment. I recognize that camp played an essential role in who I am today.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
The Common Core State Standards has been adopted by many states in the United States already. This issue is gaining both positive and negative opinions within the education world and society. Some want to know why the standards were created and what the meaning behind these standards is. What is the reasoning for implementing these standards, and why is there so much controversy that follows. Why do these four words cause such controversy? The following will analyze and evaluate The Common Core State Standards in hopes to understand why education is being overtaken by them.

The continuous prerequisite to provide more services every day as an enterprise, corporate, or educational organizations continually expands reflects the need to balance the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) with a balance of in and out-service resources available for the community. The blend of cost efficiency and actionable objectives of a help-desk function should be categorized and defined by the mission and support garnered by the technology the organization includes and should disabuse the end user from seeking the “common” answer. First, a helpdesk should be defined in the sense of a direction that communicates what users should be looking for, such as a particular malfunction or corruption to a user PC rather than the traditional error or search of a particular function. Having spent the better part of six summers hiking, cooking, orienteering, and practicing archery on the trails of Huddart Park, California, summer camp became a very precious time of my life. When I entered high school, I began working as a Unit Aide at my camp which meant I had the privilege to now teach young girls a whole slew of tasks such as survival skills, first aid, and knife skills. On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs put together an incredible keynote presentation.
