Hi, I’m Maria Pendleton and currently, I am in the middle of my fall semester of my first year at DMACC. I am enrolled in the Commercial Horticulture program in Ankeny. I plan to continue on to receive my Horticulture AAS degree in Plant Production. I am really enjoying the program because it is expanding my knowledge and challenging me at the same time. After I graduate, I plan on working back near my hometown in southwest Iowa and work as a manager in a greenhouse or nursery. For volunteer work, during the year, I volunteer back at my local church at their annual breakfasts by helping with serving. Last year, I made meals at the World Food Prize that went back to help feed people in Tanzania. I would benefit from this scholarship because not only would it help with the cost of my tuition, but the support will also help lessen my worries about my finances. This scholarship will help my parents as well since they are helping me with my college education. During the past two months and currently, my dad has been in the hospital due to having pancreatitis. In August when he was introduced with it, he went into septic shock and that day he had coded seven times. It is a miracle that he is with my family still, and with the support of this scholarship, it would help out a lot due to the medical bills that my family has. Both of my parents went to college and received a college degree. Personally, I believe it is valuable to have a college degree because a college degree sets you apart from other people with a lesser degree, if any. A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offers programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income than someone who does not have a degree. College is more of a life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers should attend college for job preparation.
One of the many reasons why getting a college education is worth it is because there are more job opportunities. Most job now a days don't just require a high school diploma. A lot of employers are looking for people with degrees because they have more knowledge and will get the job done right. Between December 2007 and January 2010, jobs that required some one with a college degree grew by 187,000. Georgetown University calculated that by 2018 nearly 63% of jobs will require at least some college education. Finding a decent job is tough now a days, but having a college degree or at least some college education will make it a little easier. A degree may not necessarily guarantee a good high paying job, but the chances are a lot better with one (procon.org).
I need this scholarship to achieve my goals and most importantly to make my family proud. My family did not get this chance that you are giving me so I am not just doing this for me, I am also doing this for them. I already have all the support from all of my family and all of my friends, but that alone is not enough to conquer my dreams, and to prove all the people that have doubted me that they were wrong. The opportunity to receive this scholarship would allow myself to further my education because going to college is something i’ve always planned to do since I was little. As of right now, I will be the first to attend college since before my grandparents. To have this opportunity and chance would really mean a lot to not only myself, but my family. Due to financial needs, this scholarship will give myself the head start I need when it comes to paying for tuition. Consequently, neither one of my parents can afford to put me through college, therefore I will need to work my way through school to pay for tuition.
This scholarship would help me be able to afford going to college and getting a doctrine in Psychology. Having this scholarship would mean I would not have to take a loan or could take a smaller loan to pay for collage. Loans, especially school loans, have caused many individuals to be in debt. I do not want to graduate college and already have an enormous amount of debt to try and pay off. Collage is expensive especially for a one income family. My mother has no savings at all and barely makes ends meet each mother. This year she had to file bankruptcy so she did not lose the house. There is no possible way she could help me with college.
