Think of two famous explorers real quick! Here are two, Christopher Columbus and the Vikings (hold on there I said explorers, not football players) or Marco Polo and Amelia Earhart. Do you know why explorers traveled? Some traveled to discover new lands and some traveled for fame or money. Explorers discovered new trade routes, expanded empires and built new technology. What do you think these explorers have in common?

Hernan Cortez was a very famous explorer. He was born in Medellin, Spain in 1485. Hernan Cortez set sail for the new world at 19 to win an empire for Spain. After spending a few years in Hispaniola, he joined Diego Velazquez’s expedition to Cuba in 1511. He overthrew the Cuban leader and convinced the Cuban soldiers to join him. The conquistador set sail to Mexico in 1518 to defeat the Aztec empire. He finally took the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, in 1521. King Charles I appointed him governor of New Spain in 1522. Hernan Cortez retired to Spain and died in 1547 at 62 years old. …show more content…

Neil Armstrong joined NASA and was command pilot of his first mission, Gemini VIII. In July 1969, he also served as commander for Apollo II. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong took his famous first step on the moon’s surface. Neil Armstrong worked for many years in the space field and retired in 1992.
