The epigraph and the title of the novel come from the opening stanza of William Butler Yeats’s poem The Second Coming. Things Fall Apart blissfully reflects the rise of imperialism as Britain and France take control of African territories. With the end of the Second World War, the German Empire collapses and the League of Nations takes it upon itself to take control of the former German colonies. Due to the implementation of British and French monarchies within these newly distributed territories, an anti-imperialistic stronghold arises within the colonies and cause for a civil unrest within the African territories.

Through the main character and protagonist of the book, Okonkwo, we recognize the distortion of African culture that takes place within the Umuofia tribe when threatened by the intruding missionaries, and how this deeply affects Okonkwo, who would do whatever it takes to protect his tribe and the culture and traditions that lie within it. Okonkwo's character is collectively made up of his wealth and honor, his dedication to his tribe and everything that it withholds, his fiery personality, and lastly, his pride and courage. All of these traits are what make Okonkwo the prestigious man he is, and I believe his character is what makes the story truly tragic.
By utilizing an unbiased stance in his novel, Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe promotes cultural relativity without forcibly steering his audience to a particular mindset. He presents the flaws of the Ibo tribe the same way he presents the assets—without either condescension or pride; he presents the cruelties of the colonizers the same way he presents their open mindedness—without either resentment or sympathy. Because of this balance, readers are able to view the characters as multifaceted human beings instead of simply heroes and victims. Achebe writes with such subtle impartiality that American audiences do not feel guilty for the cruel actions of the colonizers or disgusted by the shocking traditions of the tribesmen. The readers stop differentiating the characters as either “tribesmen” or “colonizers”. They see them simply as people, much like themselves. With this mindset, the audience starts to reflect upon their own cultural weaknesses. Conversely, the colonizers forcefully declare their religion onto the tribesmen instead of neutrally presenting their beliefs. Achebe prevails over his anger to present his opinion without forcefulness and with open-minded consideration. Yes, the colonizers succeed in converting many tribesmen into Christians; however, their success is subjective because they destroy African culture in the process. Ultimately, Achebe is successful in delivering his political views, but he does so by encouraging open-mindedness and cultural relativity instead of forcing his individual ideals upon his readers.
Most of what we know to be African Literature, talks about the changes from an un-dignified "lion-chasing" culture to that of a semi-dignified European society. The novel Things Fall Apart is not your typical "tall African tale." The novel is a story, a story not just about one person, but about an entire civil-society circa 1890's that becomes overwhelmed with the ideas and beliefs of the European colonizers, or as some like to refer, "the white man." Author Chinua Achebe witnessed this "invasion" first-hand, so who better to tell the story of Nigerians than a Nigerian. It is Achebe's Nigerian perspective that brings the reader face to face with the truth, and not just another "white man's" idea of what the truth should be. It is Achebe's view that kills the notion that the Nigerian Ibo weren't just a bunch of cultureless and godless savages, as some European colonizers might have you believe. Despite the view of European colonizers, the Ibo of Nigeria possessed a culture and a civilization long before colonization began.
Culture collisions are in our everyday lives here in America in our own little towns. We might not notice our culture changing because it is a part of our everyday lives. Culture collisions cause some people to triumph and some people to fail. In the novel, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, the Ibo tribe did not see these culture clashes everyday until the “white men” showed up and influenced the Ibo to change their ways. Achebe shows how many of the characters react to this culture shock. Obierika is one of the main characters that shows his sense of identity through this culture collision.
When cultures collide, everyone will have a response to it. Some, good and others, not nearly as much. Okonkwo, a character in Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, was one of those who did not have a good response to the cultural collision caused by the introduction of western ideas into his local culture. Okonkwo is a generally stubborn character and the book does an interesting job of giving examples that show his nerve, spontaneity, and distaste towards new ideas. From the get-go, we observe that Okonkwo is not an understanding person, and he does not appreciate the change.

When two vastly different communities of people come into contact with each other, depending on each of their perceptions, they will not have a full understanding of each other.
