Many people wonder what South America is like, well here is a small glimpse of what one of the states in South America is like. Colombia is known for its beautiful emeralds and tall ancient buildings. For its tall mountains and colorful colors, it's also known for its wonderful coffee. Colombia's modern life today is very much like USA modern life if you live in the cities, “but if you live in the mountain regions many people will work on the coffee plantations. Fourteen percent of Colombians live on less than one dollar a day and about fifty percent of Colombians live below the poverty line. The poor Colombians live in shacks without running water, are underfed, and some do not even own basic furniture. The wealthy Colombians often have several maids, cars, large houses and have the typical machines-computers, DVD players, cell phones digital cameras-of middle-and upper-class Americans. ”(Lopata 51) The church is one of the most important foundations of life in Colombia for the Catholic people. In almost all schools, Catholic is practiced, the Catholic religion is part of the curriculum. They do daily prayers in almost all the schools. Students attend church services while they're in school. Colombians hardly ever get divorced. Colombian children are expected to be baptized, have godparents, and to be raised up in the Catholic traditions. Colombians prefer a slow lifestyle. Both the poor and the rich in Colombia, live at a slower pace than most people in North America. Colombia's gather together with friends, family for long meals instead of doing many activities. Colombians love to make handmade gifts and homemade goods. They love to give away gifts to their friends and family.
