The Sin of the Mariner Samuel Taylor Coleridge 's use of various types of symbolism in “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” to give the simple story a more depth meaning. The story is simply about a old Mariner telling his tale about killing a bird and his experiences with supernatural contact to wedding guests. Without any thought, any ready could tell that the story had much more meaning rather than a man telling a story. The story starts off at a wedding and the wedding is a symbol of happiness and new beginnings, and a old ancient mariner told his tale to wedding guest. There was no wind in the air for any ship around us to move anywhere but the mysterious ship appear to be coming closer to them. Joy turned to fear as they saw the boat that had arrived next to them. Death, embodied in a naked man and Life-in-Death, embodied as a naked woman was seen on the ship and they had been playing with dice. Death and Life-in-Death was playing for the mariner 's soul and Life-in-death had won which meant the mariner could not die and escape the punishment at all. The mariner was bound to face the his punishment for a long time. As the ship sped away, the night had came and at the crescent moon had rose from the horizon. The crew looked at the mariner in a evil way and without sound, instantly dropped dead. One by one the mariner saw the souls of the crew shoot up into the sky just as he had shot his arrow at the albatross. The souls of those who were going to hell would have had more mercy than what the mariner will be punished for, the mariner had to live a living hell. Because Life-in-Death had won the dice game, the mariner could not die until he paid his due and that could be never. He was surrounded by “slimy” creatures that traveled with him on the boat. No matter how many times he prayed, the mariner would be denied of his prayer until the “slimy” creatures allowed him to pray. “Beyond the shadow of the ship, I watched the water-snakes They moved in tracks of shining white, And when they reared, the elfish light Fell off in hoary flakes. Within the shadow of the ship I watched their rich attire: Blue, glossy green, and velvet black, They coiled and swam; and every track was a flash of golden fire.”(277) The mariner saw the world as hot, salty, pungent, and rotten and despised everything around him. Only when the mariner started to appreciate the beauty that surrounded him, was when he was given the right to pray. The snake had represented evil throughout the western countries and to him he had blessed it without even knowing. His heart was filled with love as he started to appreciate the true nature around him. The albatross had fell from his neck as if the burden was off his shoulders and it had become a cross that he no longer had to
