"In our nation today, have we lost respect for one another's rights and beliefs? If so, how would respecting the rights and beliefs of others make for a better society?” Americans have had a constant battle of determining the ethical lines of respect since the implementation of our rebellious principles. The individualistic American doctrine of supporting the underdog, questioning the status quo, and fighting for liberation founded this uniquely experimental nation. Consequently, Americans have always had different opinions of what is considered respectful in light of the Constitution, individual freedoms, and our moral integrity. Progress is just a slow process. Since people instinctually problem solve for a better future, weak points in society are always focused on to strengthen. That is the beauty of human nature. We do not settle for good enough, we strive to be the most efficient as possible. Because Americans have focused on human rights since the dawn of the new nation’s existence, social equality is constantly being improved. With the global network of knowledge, more people are able to understand, respect, and empathize with other cultures, opinions, and identities. Disrespect has become a common theme of news reports and our daily lives with the recent Presidential Election and social protests. But, criticizing society is not disrespecting the American way of life. Our civil rights and democracy are based on the freedom of speech.
