Clinical psychology is not just regular psychology. This education can last from 8 to 12 years. First clinical psychologists must spend 4 years as an undergraduate. Then they need a bachelor's in education, psychology, or sociology. Clinical psychologists also need a masters degree in psychology, but many clinical psychologists earn a doctoral degree in addition to a masters degree. The doctoral degree can take 5 to 6 years alone. Depending on the state requirements they may need to have a one year internship as well. It is also important to reach out to others, and let them know your interests. It is a good idea to stay open minded through all of this. You could also participate in science competitions, work with others around you who support your interests, contact colleges in your area, attend lectures on human behavior, volunteer at mental institutes, and when possible try to take college preparatory and advanced placement classes. In my opinion, this is the career I would like to go into. I find it enjoyable, and it just seems right for me. I am already taking local college classes in high school and these include 2 different psychology classes. I would like to work in a psychiatric hospital with teens and young adults. There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
Good jobs for psychology majors are available for those who have earned a bachelor's, master's and doctorate degree. Psychology courses train individuals to work effectively with others, conduct tests and assessments and correct behavioral problems. Ever since I was in middle school I was fascinated by the world of psychology. The thought of being able to get into someone’s mind by merely speaking them through it intrigued me terribly and I was just so amazed by all of the different areas of it I didn’t know for a couple of years what I wanted to do in that field specifically, but I knew I was meant to be a psychologist of some sorts. Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
Many associate psychology with sitting in a chair in a small office as someone taking notes, asking how you feel about a certain event or feeling, or analyzing your deepest secrets and memories. However, it branches off into many other fields. A clinical psychologist’s main job is “to reduce the distress and improve the psychological wellbeing of clients” (Bond). This can include anything from depression, eating disorders, and addiction, to mental illness, family and personal relationships, and learning disabilities (Bond). A clinical psychologist usually will choose to have an emphasis in a certain field such as children and learning disabilities and work in schools or social work facilities, or mental illness and work in a hospital (Bond).

On top of this, I believe my lack of patience would also make it extremely difficult to work with demanding clients. Clients that “violate boundaries, externalize blame, refuse to accept responsibility, are incompatible, push [the therapist’s] buttons, are impatient and argumentative” may frustrate me greatly to the point where it may negatively impact the effectiveness of the therapeutic process, such as counter transference or a lack of effort when planning an intervention and directly working with the client (Kottler, 2010, p.155). While I understand that entering this profession would not suit me, I greatly admire and respect those that have the patience, skill and ¬¬¬¬determination to become clinical psychologists.
