My first observation was when attended church services and I observed the pastor did not use any props. The pastor was speaking on the power of prayer. The presentation was very informative and useful. I observe a couple of verbal and non-verbal communication during the presentation; he maintained great eye contact with the audience and had great body language. His verbal communication was great as well with remaining calm and focused. The pastor did an excellent job with appropriately demonstrate his topic without props, he talked from the heart and gave examples from his life regarding the power of prayer.
My second observation is from a town hall meeting that was conducted by CEO of Governance, Risk & Compliance for the company I work for.
Another big part of the delivery was hand gestures and movements. He started by sitting next to a small table during his speech. But, by the end he was up and walking all over the stage as the message got more intense and more meaningful as he approached his conclusion. I found it helpful instead of distracting. It was more entertaining, allowing me to focus in on him instead of daydreaming in my
The speaker organized the presentation very well and made it easy to follow for the audience. She chose words that got the message across clearly and were not difficult to understand. Since this was targeted at a younger audience, she simplified the concepts and was very specific. The sentences of the speech were structured appropriately, and had no grammatical errors. She also included some transitions in between, especially when moving from one idea to the next which made the flow
After finishing the speech, I realized I had misjudged his capability. His usage of pathos wasn’t clearly positioned but that was the beauty of it. Most might miss it, but even his title had pathos dripping all over it. It made people question whether they had the ability to make others listen to them; hence, making the people attentively listen if they followed the steps he was mentioning. He made everyone fear the thought of not having the potential to make others listen to them which persuaded them to use the tips he mentioned.
He did not mess up on words and seemed genuinely focused on the task at hand. His tone was serious and not off track, regardless if the speech was right in front of his face, he was able to keep the focus on the
The speech didn’t feel scripted, he was comfortable and was credible with his information. His transitions went smoothly with his speech. To support his topic, he used statistics and even expert advice. He used examples, such as personal stories and friend’s stories. The detail in his explanations were put together very well and descriptive.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located in the well-known city of Jerusalem, which is one of the oldest cities in the world. This city was originally inhabited by the Jebusites and later by Hebrew tribes. Jerusalem is known for being the sacred city, since it is home to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It was declared a UNESCO heritage city in 1981.
Speeches functioned as great tools for inspiring and motivating people. A passionate and charismatic speaker could often change a group of people’s view of the world with just a short speech. A perfect example of this phenomenon can be seen in the leaders of religious groups such as Matthias and Joseph Smith. These two men both possessed the ability to make people pi...
Every religion embodies a plethora of recognized rituals that are significant to its teachings. Customs exclusive to each religion can include acts such as: attending a weekly mass, praying five times a day at specified hours, celebrating the transition from childhood to manhood, along with endless others. The similarity shared amongst all religious rituals is that the follower of faith must believe whole-heartedly in what he/she is doing or saying. Dhikr, or the remembrance of God, is a ritual based in Islam that does not receive the attention it deserves from mainstream Muslims, and is highly under appreciated for its value (Robson 238). Its myriad versions allow it to be very personal, whereas other rituals are more structured, which is
It was interesting this speech because it felt as if there was multiple speeches and focuses within this 30 minute speech. He covered so many helpful life tips throughout this speech. This speech caused me to realize we as people make things much more complex than we need it to be. We have the power and when it gets hard in life we have to keep pushing through to get what we want in our lives. What makes certain people different and stand out is the ones who can’t be outworked the people who don’t give up and I have decided that the person I want to be is a person who doesn’t give up when times get hard.
Overall, this book helped me become more aware of my weaknesses with my preaching style and also gave me tools to strengthen them. The examples are very basic and practical and helped highlight key skills and situations that a preacher can experience when doing a sermon. This book added more knowledge to me and gave me new insights that I can use as a tool when I go back with my ministry as a youth worker.
On Sunday March 12th and 19th, my husband and I attended Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church (HTSN) in Finneytown, Ohio. The church conducts Orthros (Matins) at 8:15 am and Divine Liturgy from 9:30-11:30 am. I chose to attend HTSN for two reasons; first, they host the annual Panegyri Festival and two, learning about the 1054 split intrigued me given the current state of the Methodist Church.
When the church came into view it had a fairly large parking lot; however one had a few cars. Walking into the church there was very minimum color and the colors that were present were dark colors such as blue and maroon and brown were the three main colors. The service was to begin at 10:30 am but began over 30 minutes later. We were greeted by the pastor’s wife and the secretary of the church. There were no symbols or figures on the walls or on the windows of the church as compare to a catholic church.
For my observation trip, I decided to visit St. Ignatius Church in Oregon, Ohio. I visited a mass at 11:30 on Sunday November 19. I decided to visit a catholic church because my family has no religious background whatsoever, and I decided that I could go with one of my good friends that way if I need to ask questions, she was there to answer them for me.
Jesus served as example for all of humanity. His life work was to solve the fundamental problem of humanities sin and to provide eternal life with the Father. Jesus Christ demonstrated the way humans should live. He modeled behavior to the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, women, tax collector, to His friends. He came to set the example of the way to live for Christians. Basically, Jesus life was an outline of how to live your own life. Jesus confirmed that you should love your neighbor as yourself. That you should love your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength. This was demonstrated on a daily bases. Jesus verified that although humans are prone to sin, one can make a choice to not sin. When tempted by Satan, Jesus refrained from sin and turned to God the Father for strength to turn away from the temptation. Jesus was the teacher of complete, true knowledge.
Our observations took place at Newman’s Catholic Church. In particular, we observed the interactions of a priest for an hour and thirty minutes. We began by observing how he interacted with members of the church for the first fifteen minutes before service began. Then we focused on his interactions with the assembly during service and finally, we witnessed how he interacted with others after mass. During this time a few noticeable differences occurred.
