A three-year-old child approaches the court bench and places her hand over the Holy Bible, swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She takes a seat at the witness stand while clenching her stuffed animal in her small innocent arms. She gently brushes the bouncy blonde curls from her face as she looks into the eyes of her rapist. For one so small, she is quite strong. I am proud to admit that I was this little girl, and I am a survivor. There are sixty million survivors of sexual abuse in America today. Girls are sexually abused three times more than boys are, yet one in every six males will be molested before the age of sixteen (Hopper, Child Abuse: Statistics, Research & Resources, 1998). People generally associate child molesters with dark eyes and strange faces. We think that these sick people can be pointed out in a crowd because of their appearance. I personally was molested by my pre-school teacher, his wife and their son. If that won't shock you, he was the minister of our local church. Sex offenders can be found anywhere. We'd like to think that they are scary looking and easy to recognize, but the harsh reality is that these people can range from our family members and spouses, to our friends and neighbors. It's time we start protecting our children. It is our duty as adults to guide and protect our youth from the horrible crimes against children. To turn a cheek or close your eyes is inhumane. In this life it is survival of the fittest. I ask you, how can we survive if we're our own biggest enemy? Problems must be solved immediately. For every child who cries at night Alone with shame and pain and fright For every child who wants so much To only feel a gentle touch For the beaten child, who cries in pain Whose tears run silent, like the rain For the child used to satisfy lust Who never learns to love or trust For the child taken from her home And made to feel so all alone For the child whose home is just a shell Where life becomes a living hell For the child who smiles but cannot feel Because of scars to deep to heal For every child who yearns for love I hope and pray to God above To hear your cries and heal your pain And give you back... Your life again.
