Financial Issues of Child Care.
According to the National Association of Child Care Resources and Referral Agencies, prices for child care range from $3,582 to $18,773 annually. (2010) Families below the Federal poverty line will spend at least 23 percent of their annual earnings on child care (Urban Institute, 2007). Child care has become a daily need for most working families in the Unites States. In most cases, the quality of child care is under the mantra "you get what you pay for," which would attribute to the high cost of child care. Not only do children need to be watched, but also cared for and nurtured. For this reason, families are willing to make sacrifices in order to place their children in good care. Despite negative opinions concerning the effectiveness of the public school system, there is no denying that it keeps many young adults off the streets and out of trouble. The public school system provides meals, care, and education. The same can be done for young children across the board without families spending money. This solution would require an allocation of funds from the U.S. Government, primarily through tax dollars. Part of the issue in quality child care is many providers are over run or overcrowded in their facilities due to either a lack in funding to hire more care providers, or because the turn over rate is high (Child Research Net, "High Turnover Among Early Childhood Educators," 2012). A program that would give an added benefit to child care providers would give them an incentive to want to do their jobs well in order to get the benefit along with staying a full term for the benefit to be valid.
