1. What are the benefits of child care?
Children can benefit many ways from attending child care. It can benefit social development as it allows learning how to assert themselves into a crowd, how to make friends and how to engage with others . An increase of appropriate social behaviour, social skills, values and knowledge also occur. In correlation to social skills, emotional development is advanced as it’s less likely for separation anxiety and social withdrawal symptoms . A child’s social adjustment later on in life is highly contingent on their experiences in child care as it can be beneficial to fitting in and joining in when first starting school and meeting new people. As children are involved in vigorous and moderate activities, it aids in bone/muscle growth and improved coordination, balance, posture and flexibility . Young children that can socialise and exercise show confidence in other areas of life including, concentration, sleeping patterns, self-esteem and their senses of belonging. A study that compared informal care to formal care showed that formal care was linked to somewhat better cognitive and language development where pre-academic skills involving letters and numbers was better and there were fewer behaviour problems between ages 2-3 and more at age 4 . Other studies have found that children learning from trained caregivers pander to make significant improvements in social and cognitive areas in comparison to being around untrained caregivers. Formal care refers to care away from home, such as; before and after school, long day care, family day care and occasional day care. The advantages of using formal care consist of the fact that a day care centre is more affordable than nanny care and carers and staff are reliable and won’t call in sick . Children attending formal care have the ability to socialise with children of same or different age groups, backgrounds and gender and a structured environment that provides the appropriate learning curriculum to aid in development . An individual as a caregiver has more one-on-one time with a child as long as their group of children is small. A child could form a stronger bond with a smaller setting and possibly have less separation anxieties to deal with. Some parents feel the time spent with one person could benefit their child more than being with multiple caretakers. The cost of a caregiver usually is less than the traditional day care centers because there is less overhead, but there are not as many opportunities available to them. If a caregiver becomes ill or needs to take a vacation, it is the parent’s responsibility to have a back up to take care of the child during that time. A child with many health problems would possibly not be exposed to as many germs at an individual’s house because they would not come into contact with as many other children on a daily basis. On the other hand, individuals may be more lenient and allow children that are ill to attend. This could be a problem if the parents do not have family or friends that would or could care for the child during this time. A parent may have to miss work entirely to take care of the child, and with the loss of income could put the whole family at risk. Children who participate in quality early learning programs tend to be more successful later in school. They are also most socially and emotionally competent. In addition those children show higher verbal and intellectual development during early childhood than children who do not participate in early learning programs (A Parent’s Guide to Choosing Quality Child Care). In order for a child care center to be a quality center they must have an educated staff, a program accreditation, and good health and safety practices. Parents choose high quality child care for many reasons. These programs prepare children for school in which they gain intellectual and social skills. Also the programs are a good opportunity for children because they receive age-appropriate learning materials and activities to let the children learn and grow.

It is common knowledge that a parent is considered the most efficient caregiver for their children. It’s also known that with daily responsibilities of caring for a child financially, parents partake in full-time and/or part-time employment. While needing to do so, many children attend daycare/preschool facilities. Granted, it is the parent’s responsibility to cautiously select where they decide to take their children. This is because parents know that while they are away for numerous hours of the day, their children are in the hands of another care provider and that their care would have an enormous impact on their children. At a young age, a child’s social and cognitive skills are continuing to take shape and the amount of time spent in these facilities has a resilient impact on a child’s development. With proper and superior care no matter the time spent, such positive effects on a child’s development should endure in a child’s cognitive and social development. The importance of social-emotional development and toddlers makes an impact in a child life when these skills are developed starting in infancy. Encouraging positive behaviors and using positive discipline practices that helped to develop the ability to make good choices as well as recognizing the confidence that is built when these behaviors are repeated.
