When the term child brides comes up, most people picture a young girl paying dress up with her best friends and marrying her stuffed animals. Unfortunately, child brides is a real global issue that refers to young girls forced into marriage before the age of 18. According to GirlsNotBrides.org, each year 15 million girls are married before the age of 18 which means young girls are being married off 1 girl every 2 seconds. Today, 700 million women alive today were married as children. What does it mean to be a child brides? Child brides can be found on every continent on Earth, even though in the majority of countries it is now highly illegal. It might seem like a centuries old practice, but it can be found in South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and yes, even North America. Right now, African countries are showing higher amounts of child marriage practices than most areas, but that doesn’t mean it is less of an issue anywhere else. According to GirlsNotBrides.org, in Niger which is the country with the highest rates of child marriages the percentage of child marriages is at 76% ( ). The country with the highest absolute number of child marriages is India, where you will find 26,610,000 women that were married before the age of 18 ( ). According to WGCU from PBS, in areas like Rajasthan, over 68% of girls are married before the age of 18. These percentage show a huge majority of girls being married instead of going to school and getting jobs (PBS). A lot of the data found on child marriages is not an exact number or percent due to the face that many of these marriages are illegal or happen in the country where the government does not have the resources or power to know the exact amount of child marriages occurring.
