Ingesting lead can have detrimental effects on human life. The effects of ingesting lead in not only seen in children but adults as well. Once lead is in the body it never goes away. Over time lead stored a person teeth and bones (World Health Organization, 2016). While ingesting lead can be very detrimental to a child lead can also have harmful effects in adults as well as pregnant women.
A child who ingest lead can have many adverse problems. According to the EPA lead exposer is children can have sufficient effect on a child (EPA, n.d). For example, exposer to lead as a child can cause a damage to the central and peripheral nervous system. Expose to lead as a child can also cause learning disabilities, hearing loss, and many other things (EPA, n.d). Even small amounts of lead can cause detrimental effects to a child. When a child is exposed to serve amounts of lead the child many have a diminished IQ (Brown & Margolis, 2012). This can happen because when the lead in introduced to the blood stream it kills nerve cells (Rosen, 2016). Not only can a child who is exposed to lead have a diminished IQ but the child can also show signs of short attentions span and antisocial behaviors (Rosen, 2016). When lead is ingested by adults through contaminated water, adults can display many harmful outcomes. For example, when lead is ingested by an adult they may experience high blood pressure (Brown & Margolis, 2012). The high blood pressure can put them at risk for cardiovascular cancer (Brown & Margolis, 2012). Not only is high blood pressure a major concern for adults who ingest lead but kidney failure and gout can be present because of high levels of lead in the blood stream (Brown & Margolis, 2012).
