Child abuse can affect a child in the long-run and it can be both positive and negative. Hence, measures taken on child abuse is crucial in determining the child’s behaviour in the future when they reach adolescence and go through adult life. Detection and proper management can help child abuse victims to overcome the obstacle and progress in their life without being held back by their past. (Lowenthal, 2016, Definitions of Child Abuse, 2)

Child abuse can be categorized in many different types. Sexual, emotional, psychological and neglect is one of many. The victims might develop characteristics based on their past experience. Depending on the severity of abuse, these children might be diagnosed with Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD). This occurs when an individual experiences a traumatic event in their life. In this case, abused by a stranger, caretaker, family member or close relative. (Roy H., 2016)

Due to the fact that the victims are children, they do not have the power to speak up. They are also afraid to speak up as the perpetrator can threaten to abuse them further. Hence, the abuse only gets recognized or known when it is revealed to a person they trust. (Tan T, 2013)

To help children experiencing child abuse, the Ministry of Social and Family Development's (MSF) Child Protective Service (CPS) in Singapore work towards investigating these cases and identifying them by the severity of abuse. The child will be taken away by CPS if investigations show that it is high-risked. For low to moderate cases, these children will be placed at child protection specialist centres where staff are equipped and knowledgeable and able to handle these type of cases. (Tan T,
