xThe probability a man in his lifetime will develop cancer is 43.9% and in women it’s a 38% chance stated by American Cancer Society on September 2013. Cancer is not just one disease but also many diseases. There are more than 100 different types of cancer. Cancer is a term used for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues. Cancer cells are able to spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph node systems. In modern day times we are limited on the treatment for this horrific disease. The main treatment we do have for cancer is Chemotherapy.
But today I am going to persuade you that chemotherapy is not worth the risks.
Personal Relevancy: I have noticed over the past 3 years

As cited by Cancer.org on November 2013 “Chemotherapy targets cells that are actively growing and dividing. Although this is a defining characteristic of cancerous cells, it is also a feature of some of the actively growing normal cells, such as cells in the blood, mouth, intestines, and hair. Side effects occur when the chemotherapy damages these healthy cells that maintain the body's function and appearance.”
Furthermore different drugs cause different side effects. Although certain side effects may be predictable for certain classes of drugs, each person's experience with chemotherapy is unique.
With that said common side effects caused by chemotherapy drugs explained on October 22nd, 2011 by CancerResearch.org include: Fatigue, pain, sores in the mouth and throat, blood disorders, nervous system effects, changing in thinking/memory, permanent organ damage, sexual and reproductive issues and even death. It doesn’t just end there; cancer survivors also have a higher risk of developing second cancers later in life. Komen.org reveiled that between 30-60% of women who have had breast cancer before in the lymph nodes eventually develop it somewhere else in the body. Now that you know what type of adverse reactions to expect lets move onto how chemotherapy can be non
...0’s cancer mortality rates have dramatically decreased from 10% to over 80% for leukemia. Overall decline in mortality for cancer was nearly 54% from 1978 to 2008 (National Cancer Institute, 2011). Decrease in mortality rates are due to improvements in cancer treatments. Recent advances in treatments are due to aggressive cancer therapies and collaboration of findings from clinical trials. More than 80 percent of patients are expected to be long term cancer survivors (National Cancer Institute, 2011).
What the recent studies are showing is pretty scary. Our country has the highest number of colon-rectal cancer cases being reported in the entire world. And the disease is equally extensive among males as they are in females. In fact the disease today is killing more Americans than it ever did before. To some it is too embarrassing a subject to talk about. But it must be realized that cancer and deaths resulting from that are much more serious things and should be dealt brushing aside all sorts of inhibitions.
In my opinion, chemotherapy will still be used in the future for cancerous diseases. I believe researchers will come to find that other severe diseases, besides bone marrow disease, can also use chemotherapy for treatment. I feel that our society today is known for being strong and not giving up hope, especially when an aggressive diseases attacks. Because of this, more patients will choose to endure chemotherapy treatments in hope for success at the end of the journey.
According to the American Cancer Society, many side effects to radiation therapy occur because normal, healthy cells near the treatment area may become damaged. Temporary side effects may include fatigue, skin changes, hair loss, low blood counts, and eating problems. Longer-term disadvantages to radiation therapy consist of potential damage to the tissue, glands and organs near the vicinity of the tumor, the incapacity to destroy tumor cells that remain undetected on imaging scans, the inability to destroy all cancerous cells in the tumor, infertility, scar tissue growth and more. Unfortunately, when radiation therapy is solely used on particular types of cancers, it may not be entirely successful. This rings true especially for specific cancers that have
This statement is very true. When someone is diagnosed with cancer it starts a journey down a road that no one wants to travel on. In recent years, there have been countless trials and tests to find a cure for this terrible disease but none have been entirely successful. There are treatments on the market that can help and slow down the process, but they have various side effects that aren’t quite appealing. The best treatments in todays world include; Rituxan, Avastin, Revlimid, and Gleevec. They all have a different tasks and developments that take affects in the body but each remarkable in its own way.
About 12% of women in the United States will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, more than any other type of cancer (www.breastcancer.org, 2015). Many people lack the knowledge of how breast cancer is developed. Some people think they will not get cancer because they do not smoke cigarettes, but this is not the only cause of cancer developing in the breast. Anyone can get cancer. Everyone is potentially at risk for developing some form of Cancer (American Cancer Society, 2015).
Cancer is a very large issue in the world. Cancer is a sickness that can lead to many life threatening problems and can eventually lead to death. There are many different kinds of cancer that can effect a person without them even knowing it is there. One type of cancer that can be easier to detect would be skin cancer. Skin cancer can be diagnosed by seeing a doctor or dermatologist, if they see an abnormal mole or spot on your skin, they many ask to remove the spot and test it in their laboratory. If the spot or mole comes back positive for skin cancer, they next will run more tests to see if it has spread throughout the body. The first thing the doctor will ask you is the time frame from when you first started noticing this on your body,
...effects that can come with chemotherapy such as nausea, vomiting, hair loss, fatigue, mouth sores, and more. Radiation therapy is pretty bad but not as painful with side effects. Side effects for radiation therapy are coughing, fever, fullness of chest, soreness and scaring. Many times surgery is not an option but when is it is one of the best options due to the fact there are less side effects and no strenuous treatment. One of the reasons cancer is such a bad thing is because the treatment is not good but research is taking place and working to get more effective.
The side effects brought on by chemotherapy are very harsh on the body. These side effects occur because the chemo agents are poisonous and cancer cells and normal cells are very similar so it is very difficult to leave normal cells unharmed causing the patient to experience side effects while undergoing chemo. These side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hair loss, mouth sores, skin changes, and low blood counts. These side effects don't...
According to the American Cancer Society, Each year, more than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer; furthermore Twelve percent of all women will contract the disease, and 3.5% of them will die from breast cancer (American Cancer Society, 2005). There are risk factors that may lead to breast cancer. There are 4 stages of breast cancer and several treatments, although treatments vary from types and stages of breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women who are 40 to 55 years old (Breast Cancer, 2009).Cancer occurs when cells divide uncontrollably. It changes from a normal cell to cancerous cells that require gene alterations. Therefore the altered genes and the uncontrolled growth may lead to tumors. Tumors can be benign or malignant, benign tumors are not cancerous whereas malignant are cancerous. Benign tumors will not spread, but it can damage the tissues around it. Malignant tumors invade, damage, and destroy tissues that are nearby and can spread. When cancer cells break away from a malignant tumor and enter into the bloodstream, cancer can spread throughout the body. The cancer cells from breast cancer can be found in the lymph nodes under the arm. Cancer that spreads into other parts of the body; its still has the same name as the original cancer. So basically if you are diagnosed with breast cancer and it goes into your lungs, you still have breast cancer.
According to Cancer.org, cancer is the generic name for over a hundred diseases. There are cancers for literally every part of the body. Cancer starts by abnormal cells growing out of control. Usually, if the cancer is caught earlier in the stages, it is treatable and a person would have a good chance at surviving. Unfortunately, if the cancer is untreated for a longer duration of time, the survival rate dwindles. There are types of this abnormal cell growth that can be potentially more fatal than others. There is an astonishing amount of different cancers to delve in to. Bone cancer and lung cancer are very common in this day and age. The chance of survival depends on the type, as well as the amount of time it has gone untreated.
Cancer has become a very common illness worldwide for any age, but mostly affecting adults. One can get cancer from different places in the body, that is why there are so many people with cancer, because of all the different types. Cancer can affect any gender, female or male, and any age. It varies from ovarian cancer to prostate cancer, skin cancer to lukemia. Cancer has been a problem for many years, yet we have not found a cure to treat and prevent cancer.
However most cancers mainly affect older people. Therefore as the average life expectancy in the United Kingdom has almost doubled, the risk of cancer has grown. It is estimated that a third of all cancers are caused by smoking and another third is caused by the diet people choose. These are over two hundred different types of cancer, and all have different causes, different symptoms and require different types of treatment. Some types of cancer are very common, such as breast, lung, bowel, and prostate cancer, whereas some types of blood cancers are very rare.
Leukemia is another type of cancer it is a malignant progressive disease. Some symptoms of leukemia is people weight loss, frequent infections, and easy bleeding or bruising. Also chills, dizziness, fatigue, fever, nausea, night sweats, weakness, or sweating are also side effect or symptoms of leukemia. Most people have to shave their hair of and some people fight the cancer and win. Leukemia involves abnormal white blood cells these cells responsible for fighting infection. The abnormal cell in leukemia does not function in the same way as normal white blood cells do. The leukemia cells continue to grow and divide, eventually crowding out the normal blood cells. There is over 50,000 cases of leukemia occur yearly in the U.S.
Kids are meant to be happy, play outside, go to school, and have fun. They aren’t meant to sit in hospitals, losing weight by the pound, carrying around IV poles filled with poison. It’s ridiculous and immature that we don’t have a cure for childhood cancer. The only “treatment” that we have is chemotherapy- a chemical that seems to help fight off cancer. Chemo doesn’t just fight off cancer cells though- it fights off healthy cells in your blood, mouth, digestive system, and hair follicles. The most frustrating thing about childhood cancer is that only 4% of federal funding is exclusively dedicated to childhood cancer research. It is true that more adults get diagnosed with cancer than kids, but does that mean that adults are 96% more important than children? The average age of diagnosis for an adult with cancer is age 67, and the average number of years lost is 15. 15 years are definitely many years, but not that many compared to the average number of years lost for a child- 71. Also, age 67 is a lot older than the average age of diagnoses for a child- age 6. At least the adults get to grow up and have the ability to even have cancer- some of these kids can’t even get through a fifth of their lives.
