Describe characteristics you see in leaders and explain why these would be important? Leaders are very important to our world today. Leaders give the people they interact with a sense of comfort or value, and gain the admiration of others because of the leader’s support for them. Some of the most important characteristics for someone to become a leader are open-mindedness, communication, courage and bravery, patience, humility, responsibility, and empathy. These characteristics help a leader to show compassion and trust for others and thus gives the leaders the trust and compassion of others as well. As I have mentioned the college students working in the front desk or in other internships at the MSUM Public Safety Department, these students are not in a management role, yet they make a lasting impression for people coming into the department. These students work very hard at their tasks and do a very good job in the services they provide. The college interns are trusted with even the most complex of tasks, such as helping install new technology around campus, without the supervision of their mentors as the interns have proven themselves to be so trustworthy and knowledgeable in their tasks. The front desk workers also do a phenomenal job and help to provide excellent customer service. Whenever I come to the internship, the front desk workers are very polite, remember who I am, say a cheerful “Hello,” and have the door to the offices already unlocked and ready for me to enter. One of the leadership characteristics I admire most in my internship mentor, is how he has a personal relationship with every client he comes across. He remembers the personal information such as their names, family, classes, hobbies, pets, and even birthdays. He learns this information by asking the clients questions and in turn they become curious in his life. My mom, who is another leader I look up to in life, has always said “you must be interested before you can be interesting.” My mentor embodies this and in turn makes those he works with feel valued.
