In “The Word Shaker”, Max portrays the small, skinny girl as a defiant and rebellious person. Moreover, she was determined and hopeful. The small, skinny girl shares these traits with Liesel and Liesel demonstrates these traits when she risks her life to find and talk to Max.
“No soldier had seen her yet, and Max gave her a warning. ‘You have to let go of me, Liesel.’ He even tried to push her away, but the girl was too strong. Max’s starving arms could not sway her, and she walked on, between the filth, the hunger and confusion.”(511) If Liesel would have continued talking to Max, the guards could have killed her for defying them.
