Sybil The movie I chose to give my reaction on is Sybil, starring Tammy Blanchard as Sybil, who suffers from two disorders those being dissociative identity disorder and schizophrenia. Sybil struggles through life with this identity disorder due to her childhood of having an abusive schizophrenic mother who used to tie her hands to a table for long periods of time. This disorder causes Sybil to have total of 16 different personalities. Peggy was one of Sybil’s personalities, peggy was a girl who learned math but was very angry because Sybil could not be angry. Mary Dorset was based off of Sybil’s grandmother. Overtime Dr. Wilbur discovers that each personality has a certain trait that she used to protect her from her schizophrenic mother who abused her as a child. Towards the end of the movie Dr. Wilbur cures Sybil by recording her different personalities and showing them back to her. When Sybil would come back from these phases of personality change she would realize that she, sometimes had on different clothes or in a city that she was not supposed to be in. Sybil’s alter egos would sometimes paint her paintings, Peggy drew the black and white drawings, while Vanessa and Marsha did paintings in styles that did not fit Sybil’s at all. . This was shocking to Sybil because some of her paintings we finished in ways that she would never do. Another thing that one of her personalities did was play piano. “Sybil could hardly believe it when Dr. Wilbur informed her that the piano music she was playing a recording of was Vanessa's” (Vaughan). Ruthy had the lowest self-esteem of all her egos she was the one who cried and begged for forgiveness the most. Vicky would have to have the highest self- esteem she held her head up high and never let anything get in her way. Every ego had its own self-esteem but Sybil’s was high for the most part. She liked to focus on what made her happy. If she let things get in the way of her happiness there’s no telling where she would be. Her self-esteem is really at an all time high when she is with Dr. Wilbur and feels safe and comfortable. Also, when she was dating Stan she thought very fond of herself. Although you never really know what personality you are going to get when it come to Sybil there is a clear visual on whether or not they have a high or low view of herself and needs help or in a place of comfort. Sybil’s is also, in a good place when she paints, because she enjoys to paint it causes her to be happy and for her to feel good about
