One way that August shows his bravery is how he goes to school for the first time. August is scared to go to school because he has never been to a real school. He is also scared that people will make fun of his face. Before he even got to school a kid refered to him as “Darth Sidious.” With all this, August still was brave and went to school.

Anytime Teddy was getting bullied in the book, Summer would stand up to the bully. This shows that she is brave because she risked getting bullied herself. Hansberry illustrates the constant discrimination that colored people, as a whole, endured in communities across the nation. Mama, who is the family’s foundation, is the driving force behind the family on the search for a better life. With the family living in extreme poverty, their family bond is crucial in order to withstand the repression. Hansberry effectively portrays the racism within society, and how it reinforced unity amongst the family members.

Have you ever reached success? If the answer is yes, then you probably have had support from family or friends along the way. In “Wonder Children” this theme was crucial to the success of both Maria Anna and Wolfgang. In the passage both of Maria Anna's parents called her a “prodigy” which encouraged her, and from a young age taught her how to play instruments. Wolfgang was at this point driven by his sister's success, which all started from a young age. The dad definitely played a huge role in both Maria Anna's, and Wolfgang's success as musicians. In the Passage “The Family's first prodigy” Maria Anna became even more successful, and in a way overshadowed her brother Wolfgang, but his kind actions and words, helped his sister achieve her goals. And later in the passage he had his time to shine. Support from family or friends can separate a person from achieving their goals, or stumbling under the pressure.
Have you ever been homeless? In the story “Fly Away Home,” by Eve Bunting, Andrew, the main character, lives in an airport because he is homeless. I believe to the text this makes him very brave. Kindness is another word that describes how Andrew shows he is brave. Another reason is he wants to get out of the airport. The last example is that Andrew is helpful. Troy is a father, husband, and brother to other characters in the play. Unfortunately for Troy, a strong-minded and aggressive man, he constantly complicates the relationships with his family members. Troy's hurtful actions and words make it nearly impossible for him to sustain healthy relationships with not only his two sons, but also his wife and brother.

In the psychoanalytic approach, development is discontinuous and as such occurs in stages where “people move through a series of stages in which they confront conflicts between biological drives and social expectations, and how these conflicts are resolved depends on the person’s ability to learn, to cope with others and cope with stress” (Berk 2010, p.15). According to Sigmund Freud from this theory, individuals use a mechanism called psychological defense mechanisms which when they feel an overpowering anxiety, the ego employs to protect themselves against unwanted, scary feelings or weaknesses within their psyche or consciousness. The use of these defense mechanisms can be useful sometimes and also hurtful at other times to us and others, which emanates as aggressive behavior e.g. bullying [2]. Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development are important for understanding bully behavior. According to Erikson, a “basic psychological conflict which is resolved along a scale from positive to negative determines a healthy or maladaptive outcomes of each stage” [Berk 2010, p.16], in other words as the child grows and goes through each of the psychosocial stages, he or she negotiates new cognitive and emotional experiences which enables him or her to pass through the stage with either a positive or negative outcome.
