Over shadowing functionality, fashion is human’s next need for embellishment, followed by power or status.“Fashion is, in many ways, like a river.” -Elaine Stone. It is constantly moving forward and changing. Consequently, fueling the fashion business and allowing it to prosper.In other words if there is no change, then there will be no fashion, thus no bussiness. Over the decades millions of brands and designers have been trying to adapt to the rapid and ongoing change in fashion. Those who fail to attune with constant change tend to correlate to failure in business. However, those who do adapt to constant change in fashion have the tendency to succeed in business. Three distinct trend setting designers that have successfully adapted to change are Burberry, Vera Wang and Chanel.
Burberry was founded in 1856 by 21-year old Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England. In 1880 Burberry introduced the gabardine, a waterproof, hard wearing but breathable fabric. Where the yarn goes through a process to be waterproofed before weaving. During the 19th century Burberry changed it’s name to Burberrys since many customers around the world started to call the brand “Burberrys of London”. In 1901, the Burberry logo was developed and registered as a trademark. It consisted of an Equestrian Knight logo containing the Latin word “Prorsum” which means forwards. About a decade later in 1911, Burberry became outfitters for Roald Amundsen, a famous fan who was the first man to reach the South Pole. Later on that year, the War Office chose Burberry to adapt the officer’s coat so that it would suit the conditions of contemporary welfare. Another theory that applies to Coco Chanel is her discovery and usage of textiles, as mentioned before. She transformed the idea of jersey for male undergarment to jersey for women clothing, offering women a more fitted look and comfort.
In Conclusion, Burberry, Vera Wang and Chanel are brands and designers with different stories and completely distinct styles and specializations.Burberry is known for its iconic trench coat and check pattern, Vera Wang is famous for her alluring bridal gowns and Chanel prominent for its women clothing revolution, The Chanel Suit and it’s LBD (Little Black Dress). Nevertheless, these three brands and designers all share the common factor of adaptation throughout time.
