Who is an Immigrant?
An Immigrant is someone who chooses to leave his country of origin or country of birth to another country, and in this case immigrates to Canada. Likewise, it’s important to note that in Canada that they are two ways in which one can migrate to Canada. According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (2016), one can migrate through the family class immigrants (being sponsored by a family members or relatives who are permanent residents and Canadian citizen), and through economic class immigrants (provincial/territorial nominees, skilled workers, and business immigrants with financial independence). Spouses and children may accompany immigrant from the economic class (Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), 2016).

Cultural shock may negatively affect an individual especially when they feel that stress of adjusting, distress over losing their culture and identity, begin to feel homesick, maybe loss of support, and so on. Likewise, when an individual is distress over the loss of self-worth, support, comfort, self-acceptance, identity, fulfillment and meaning, that can result in their life been affected. More so, cultural shock could come in different form, for instance an individual coming from a collectivist culture when the husband is the head of the family and he provides all that is needed for the up keep of the family and then moving to a country and then the role changes and it’s the woman providing for the home, that cloud be depressing when thinking about it. As a result, in working with this client I require to understand my own internalized culture(s) and how my personal worldviews have been shaped, to understand “who I am I as cultural beings” (Arthur & Collins, 2015, p. 286). Without this self-awareness, I risk ascribing my own values, beliefs and assumptions onto the clients, possibly re-creating abusive experiences of being silenced, blamed, shamed or
