Academic writing is an area in writing skills. Academic writing is necessary for students since they are required to write their assignments, projects, and research thesis at college and university level. Academic writing is a difficult task to be achieved and it follows a formal structure; requiring a proper beginning, middle and an end. Ideas and concept are the main focus in academic writing. Examples must be used as it helps readers to understand particular ideas and concepts. Academic vocabulary is used in formal assignments, projects and research thesis. The topic of this study was Difficulties in Academic Writing: From the perspective of king Saud University post graduate students. The result of this study is that it is difficult for students to write on their own. Students are unable to make an outline before writing drafts and it is also difficult for them to distinguish between written and spoken English. According to researcher “students are unaware of skills which are needed for successful writing”. All these drawbacks affect their writing

Many students are unaware of how to write. Writing is a process; it must have proper beginning, middle and an end. It requires brain storming, writing, rewriting, editing etc. Revising final product is also necessary for a successful writing. But students are unaware of importance of revising. According to researcher’s findings “Students are not familiar with proper writing and are unaware of skills which make writing successful”. Students face numerous writing challenges due to lack of knowledge about writing process. Students do not revise their final piece of work which is also a drawback and a reason behind poor academic writing.
Coherence and cohesion are the key components of successful writing. Most students are not familiar with coherence and cohesion which leads to poor academic writing. Moreover, less knowledge towards cohesive devices affects assignments, project work and research thesis in a negative way. Lack of vocabulary also affects a students’ academic paper negatively.
