Millions of Americans show symptoms of dyslexia. However, few people actually realize the causes, effects, fears, and treatments associated with this disorder; making, those who are dyslexic to feel isolated and misunderstood. Dyslexia is defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as, “a variable often familial learning disability involving difficulties in acquiring and processing language that is typically manifested by a lack of proficiency in reading, spelling, and writing”. This definition only begins to explain this complex disorder and the vast lack of proficiency it causes the human brain. First off, dyslexia is caused by several different factors. Dyslexia can impact skills needed to succeed in school. Such as: solving math problems, spelling correctly, taking notes, memorization skills, deeply thinking about or analyzing information, and understanding written materials. Dyslexia can also impact one's social skills. For instance: speaking with confidence, understanding jokes or puns, interpreting body language, expressing feelings, and maintaining self-esteem. It can cause a loss in friendships, in turn, the person feels alone and blames their mind. Lastly, other skills dyslexia can impact is: navigation, telling left from right, remembering words, names, or phrases, telling time, and filtering out unimportant background noises. It is, however, managed, tolerated, or handled by teaching the dyslexic person different techniques to help them continue learning and working through their situations. Such as keeping a positive spin on life. Another example is being well rested and cared for, which improves focus and concentration. Focus is normally a big topic for discussion because this disorder makes the brain take up a lot of time trying to figure out what words are being read or heard let alone what the words mean. So doing things like taking notes on a teacher's main points is crucial for learning in any lecture
