Technology is changing the world and is affecting us in ways we would never of imagined. Technology is a gateway to another world, which can be a very dangerous world. Cyberbullying is making it’s way into the younger generations with it enabling people to say things to people they feel superior too, affecting people in emotional, psychological and sometimes physical ways. Catfishing is becoming more apparent with millions of people each year are falling into the catfishing trap. Children are not developing proper social skills, their dependance on technology is making it harder for them to interact with other children and adults. These are all dangerous effects that technology has had on today’s world. These are all becoming more common …show more content…
Catfishing is not unusual to find and hear about in today’s society, a ‘catfish’ is someone that pretends to be someone that they are not by creating a fake online persona. People who catfish are usually men between the ages of 19-60 years old, according to Professor Mary Leal the people they target are often females, who have been either divorced or widowed and have inherited a large inheritance of money. Often their main goal is to exploit the people they are talking too, whether that be by asking for money, images and or videos. Many times the people that are being targeted are unaware of who they are talking to; they believe the online persona that has been created is real. More often than not the people that fall victim to being catfished are the people that use online dating websites. Phsycologytoday.com says “30% of teen girls admitted that they met up with a stranger in person after initially meeting them online” although this seems very dangerous, many teenagers will not think this as they feel like they know the person they are meeting up with. On few occasions, the person they are meeting up with is not who they say they are and the girls are put in dangerous positions. Some of the dangerous positions include abduction, assault, rape and murder although these are worst case scenarios they still occur more than people think. New Zealand has the third highest sexual assault rate with 16.2% of women over the age of 15 experiencing a form of sexual assault. The most common form of catfishing is called the “419 scammers” often these scammers work in groups, sharing ideas, poems, identities and the victim. With these scammers working in groups, it makes it almost impossible to track them down because there is more that one identity to be found. The 419 scammers will normally take the identity of a prince or a barrister asking for help to get out
The author of the book "419" is Canadian author Will Ferguson. In the book, the author examines the common form of fraud, whose peak came 80 years with the advent of mass mailings of letters by mail, and then, by the Internet. Usually the fraudsters asks the mail recipient help in multi-million dollar money transactions, promising that he will have a percentage from this money. If the recipient agrees to participate, he gradually defrauds the increasingly large sums of money, allegedly for taxes, bribes to officials, making deals, etc. Often during extortion, fraudsters use psychological pressure. I think the title of this book came from Nigerian criminal code for fraud 419. Today, the scale of the crime syndicate are amaze, and with the advent of the Internet, they have further increased. Letters from Nigeria today are worldwide, and they are millions. Although many of you will think this is funny, but only in the United States according to police estimates each year they make around 100 million dollars, with a clear growth tendency.
The topic of technology and our society has become a very controversial subject today. Many people believe that technology is an essential component of our modern world, helping us to improve communication from farther distances as well as giving us easy access to important information. On the other hand, there is the opinion that too much technology is affecting social interactions and our basic development. “Technology…is a queer thing, it brings you great gifts with one hand, and stabs you in the back with the other.” (Carrie Snow.) The CBC Documentary “Are We Digital Dummies” displayed the pros and cons when it comes to modern technology that we use in the western world everyday.
...e treated in a similar way of identity theft. Identity theft is a serious crime in which someone steals your personal information and pretends to be you to obtain resources that were not easily obtainable when they were themselves. Catfish is relatable to that crime because someone who catfish a person pretends to be someone they are not. Innocent people who feel as though they are talking to someone real and then find out that it not who they have been talking to all along. Therefore feel as though they have been deceived. The person who identity has been stolen through someone trying to catfish another person may go through the same obstacle as someone who’s been a victim of identity theft. The individual would have to go through the internet seeing fake profile and online pictures and trying to convince others that those profiles are fake and not really them.
Technology has changed the way the world generally communicates negatively by not allowing true interaction with each other, technology is changing the way we used to read physical books by preventing them to make the brain work better, and people can easily get their hands on technology and use it to do wrong towards others.
This article presents the deceptions of online dating through the users profiles through self-presentation, emotions and trustworthiness.
The multitude of positive things that technology has provided society with, outweigh the negatives. Even though computers are expensive to buy and leave many behind in the digital divide. The benefits of technology are hard to turn down. Even though the Internet and social media enable the spread of fake news, Facebook and Twitter are working hard to fix the issue. The addiction that society has with smartphones is quite troubling, but if society remembers to just put down the phone, it will be alright. All of the technology in today’s society is beneficial in some way, but society needs to be aware that is also traps them as
Love has been around since the beginning of time and for as long as romantic relationships have been around; people have tried various ways of meeting one another. The mid-1990s marked the start of online dating and since then has evolved into a much more common method of dating. Online dating is typically taken advantage of in one of two ways. Some people prefer to create their own profile and rely on themselves to choose their mate choice, while others allow the online dating services to create matches between the online subscribers. In a recent study conducted by Pew Research Center they found that one in ten American’s are using an online dating site to help them locate a spouse or a long term partner (Smith 1). Due to the advances in technology in recent years, online dating has developed into a resource that has become culturally accepted and has advanced in many ways, but with that comes mate choice, safety concerns, and the outlook on online dating.
Technology Is What You Make It The articles “How Computers Change the Way We Think” by Sherry Turkle and “Electronic Intimacy” by Christine Rosen argue that technology is quite damaging to society as a whole and that even though it can at times be helpful it is more damaging. I have to agree and disagree with this because it really just depends on how it is used and it can damage or help the user. The progressing changes in technology, like social media, can both push us, as a society, further and closer to and from each other and personal connections because it has become a tool that can be manipulated to help or hurt our relationships and us as human beings who are capable of more with and without technology. Technology makes things more efficient and instantaneous.
Whether technology is with us or hurting us, we still have to use it and it affects our lives daily. We need it to get a hold of someone. We need it to do our jobs. Most importantly, we need it to keep our lives away from harm. There are many ways to manipulate technology, but technology has more good to it than bad. There are those who use it for good, like investigators so they can figure out the real story. Then there are those who use it for bad, just like those who commit cyber bullying along with other minor and major things. We need technology regardless if people argue they like or not. There is no way to stop technology and keeping people from making it better. With the developments in technology, we may be able to enjoy all the pricey luxuries and still enjoy life at the same time.
Technology use was on the rise but has shown a significant increased rate in recent years. Technology was a beneficial tool that was used on a daily basis. Technology industries had developed many devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, iPods, and many other devices that made technology easier to access from anywhere and anytime. Technology expanded every day and the usage increased which had an effect on society especially targeting teens. Teens abused the use of technology that caused them to have serious problems mentally and physically. Teens mainly focused on technology use and caused a social disconnection from the real world. Technology use has a negative effect on teens by causing health problems and social disconnection.
From a cross-national survey, Hogan, Li and Dutton report that online dating is prevalent in all countries nowadays. Using the Internet everyday is common for people to have social activities, no matter they are from which countries. Lots of online sources provide a platform for them to have online dating (9). With the rapid advancement of Web technologies, online dating starts rising from 1997(10). However, Hogan, Li and Dutton use “cohort” effect to show that online dating is not only mainly for the teens who are willing to adopt to technology, but also to the early thirties (10-11). Also, the elder population is more willing to date online (11). In addition, different countries have varied online dating rate because of the rates of Internet co...
...Joes to torture animals in so called training. Texting in school by students and teachers takes away valuable class time. Videogames become addicting and let people become numb to violence. Parents and their strive for constant communication, also holds them responsible for the technology epidemic. The Internet makes cheating and multitasking inevitable. Internet Porn easily allows crude films in the American home. Technology cannot be reversed so now we have to suffer with consequences of technology.
Technology is changing how we think and act at younger ages. The term “technology” doesn’t only mean manufacturing processes and equipment necessary for production, it also defines a social space and could be a social problem which makes a real impact on social reality. Different types of social software affect a variety of aspects and have both positive and negative impacts. It's important to be aware of how a digitally-driven life is changing our education, sense of self, relationships, social interaction, consumerism, and ways of doing business around the world.
Technology affects everyone! Whether positive or negative, we are all affected, how it manifests itself into problems for youth will be studied and debated for years. Balancing technology throughout the educational process and keeping with current trends and uses of technology will affect everyone. Technology has transformed our youth’s daily and social lives. How do we measure the effects of technology on our ability to socialize or have a successful social life? Socializing is not just talking face to face, it’s our ability to interact, learn, and create original thought. Technology hindering today’s youth and their ability to socialize is affecting their capacity to read, write, and communicate. Today’s youth depends on careful considerations for the implementation of technologies. Our youth do not have the capability to convey their emotions through the use of technology, understand sadness, happiness or joy through simple text or emails. Communicating through the use of text, chat, and social network sites is lost using abbreviations and slang, inhibiting the use of the Standard English language. Using computers and hand held devices for relationships, reading, writing, and entertainment, turning them into introverted and socially inept individuals. Current trends resonating from our educational institutions to our workplace can be examples of how technology has altered the way younger people communicate. This tragedy transcends from youth to adulthood affecting the workplace. Social networking sites have begun to take hours away from employers. How do students understand ethical and moral dilemmas unless they are allowed to make mistakes and work through a particular problem? Creative and original thought needs...
Technology has impacted our society in a positive way it has also brought on many challenges which lead to loss of human interaction. Technology has allowed many people to do everything they need with just the touch of a button. This takes the pressure off of people to remember important numbers and dates. It has given humans the availability and opportunity to connect with friends and family all over the world, which makes it easier to maintain long-lasting relationships and stay connected no matter the
