Jayden, a two and a half year old boy loves story time, being social, and has mental and sensory functions typical for his age. However, Jayden was diagnosed with impairments in his neuromusculoskeletal and movement functions. This condition causes poor muscle control, which prevents Jayden from being mobile. As a result, Jayden sits in a baby stroller when out in the community. Adding to Jayden’s problems is dysarthria, which restricts him from producing clear speech, preventing him from communicating with peers and adults. The combination of Jayden’s neuromuscular skeletal impairments and dysarthria, restricts his engagement in self-care, communicating with classmates, directing his own play, creating interpersonal relationships, mobility …show more content…

One facilitator is Jayden’s strong family support system. Jayden’s parents are motivated to improve his physical limitations and have clear goals for his future. One of which is for Jayden to attend his neighborhood school when he enters kindergarten. This establishes clear objectives and support for Jayden’s future ensuring that he continues to succeed. Although Jayden’s support system is a facilitator, it also can act as a barrier. His parents’ large goals may be too high for Jayden to accomplish. Jayden’s possible failure could result in potential depression from failing his parents. Another facilitator is Jayden’s access to services and technology. Since Jayden was born he has been receiving occupational, physical and recently, speech therapy. These various services provide technology and tools to increase Jayden’s mobility and communication, which is a facilitator. However, in the future, Jayden will need assistive technology to walk independently. This could be very costly and there is no information on his parents’ financial status, potentially causing conflict in the home, proving to be a barrier.
