There are a variety of occupations in the field of Fashion and Consumer Sciences department. For me, I would like to become a fashion director, who has a great sense of fashion and is able to foresee the upcoming fashion trends (Fernandez, n.d). Some of the skills requirements for this job are communication, management, creativity, and analytical skills (Learning Path, n.d). Those soft skills along with formal training will be improved and as I practice and train myself by doing internships within the next five years; hopefully, I will be qualified for the fashion coordinator position. To become a professional fashion coordinator, one should go through a few programs such as two years of associate degree, four years of bachelor’s degree, and advanced post studies like master’s degree program. Sophomore year I heard about the STAR events for FCCLA, ever since then I’ve wanted to compete in them, particularly fashion design. The reason I have never competed in FCCLA is because sophomore year I didn’t feel that my skills were well developed yet. Then junior year I competed in tech-theatre for costume design and made it all the way to state. So now senior year has come and I feel that I’ve been preparing myself for two years for this moment. If I’m given the chance to compete I will be fully dedicated to my work and see to it that everything surpasses my standards. I know that I’m capable of doing this because of not only my mind set to it but also my past of competing in tech-theatre. I would stay after school for hours, spent almost every day at home working on it, sometimes all through the night because I didn’t want my train of thought or work focus to be lost. I made due dates for myself so that I was pacing my time correctly and not rushing to do last minute. Something else I did was when it came to the essay part of the competition I had my English teacher proof read it. I also had last year’s fashion teacher give me pointers on my sketching and swatches. The reason for doing that was to help make sure that it was as close to perfection as possible. Lastly I would best represent Stevens fashion club at the FCCLA competitive events by being true to myself and my work. Over the years I have grown as a person because of fashion club and it has taught me that being myself is key in not only school but in life.
Overall, this book was a big eye opener for me. For the longest time I was worried that I was the only one who wanted a career in fashion, that had no idea about anything inside the fashion world. Odell was able to make me feel like I was not alone and gave good insight on what to expect when going into job interviews and working in this industry. This book is a must read for not just people interested in the fashion industry, but also for younger adults who are wondering what they should expect during interviews, and how they should put themselves out there in order for them to grow in any
Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

As a film major you style what the actor or actress is going to wear and look like. I finally found out the million-dollar question I had for myself. I want to be a merchandise manager for a major retail company such as American Eagle a job where I am currently training to be a stylist and Jeans Expert. From the moment my hiring manager hired me she automatically saw a spark and leadership qualities in me. Usually at major retail stores like American Eagle you start from the bottom of the totem poll as a regular associate to learn the ropes.
Hair and makeup is a vital role in not only establishing a plays theme and setting, but also for an actor to feel comfortable in the shoes of their character. The theatre industry should shift into having hair and makeup its own department. Currently, hair and makeup is a murky zone in the theatre design and technician industry. From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014. My experience at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has uncovered my love of education and research.
