From the Christ like figure of Doc to his apostles, Mack and the boys, Cannery Row is ripe with religious tropes. However, Doc is also considered to be quick to anger at times, and carries with him many themes found throughout the Old Testament texts and some legends that are even more aged. However, if we consider Doc to be the messianic figure he is then it wasn't the party that Doc had a problem with, nor that it was held without his knowing on his property. The issue arises with the process by which Mack and the boys use to fund the party. The green frogs harvested ultimately causes Mack and the boys to succumb to greed in an effort to praise Doc. For approximately the past 28 years, Florida has struggled to curb the spread of a very problematic invasive species, the Burmese Python. The Burmese Python is originally native to Southeast Asia; they were brought to South Florida as pets in the mid-1990’s. Over the years, these snakes have been released into the wild where they have been able to find mates and reproduce (Florida). Burmese Pythons are invading the Everglades National Park where they rapidly feast on federally endangered species such as Woodstorks and Key Largo Woodrats (Mazzotti, 2011), causing devastating consequences to our ecosystem. Burmese Pythons will continue to multiply and jeopardize the existence of endangered species in the Everglades National Park unless more research is done and greater public awareness is made on the issue.
The intended impacts of the cane toad were to remove beetles and cane grubs from farmers sugarcane crops. In the 1930's sugar was one of Australia's major exports. In Northern Queensland farmers have had a problem with their crops known as the cane grub. The cane grub would eat away at the farmers sugarcane and surrounding trees until there was nothing left. This was a major issue with the country's number one exporting good. To try and solve the issue the Australian government brought in a foreign species of frog from Hawaii known as the cane toad. A total of 102 cane toads were released in Australia on June 22nd 1935.
In recent years, invasive species have become a significant concern to ecologists in many ecosystems around the globe. Specifically, the explosive of non-native Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) in the Florida Everglades has become a major concern among ecologists and the general public alike. Frogs are also known for their unbelievable jump, but what people don’t really consider is that many frogs contain toxins. These toxins are used in defense against their predators and gives makes them unappetizing to them. Because frogs have thin, moist skin and an aquatic tadpole stage, they are easily affected by pollution and changes in the environment.
