A person suffering from cancer is a person suffering from the pain of not being able to

achieve something in his/her life and being a reason for the pain and grief in which he/she will

leave his/her loved ones in after his/her death and this reflects their selflessness. In John Green’s

novel “The Fault In Our Stars”, the author tries to show the truth about having cancer and the

impact of cancer on one’s view of the world as a whole. Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16 year old

girl suffering from cancer who is in search of what happens after the end of her favourite novel

“An Imperial Affliction” which relates to her own life. Augustus Waters, a 17 year old boy

missing his one leg due to cancer, comes in the life of Hazel and they both fall in love with each

Through all her actions and desires Hazel shows that she does not want to leave behind a

scar on the lives of people who reside in her heart without being selfish. The reason for “An

Imperial Affliction” being Hazel’s favourite book and the ultimate desire of Hazel to visit

Amsterdam was to know what would happen to Anna’s parents after her death, which was the

only way to ensure that her parents would be living a happy life even when she is dead. Hazel

does not want to fall in love with Augustus and to be very close to Augustus because she does

not want to leave him in pain as she is going to die and therefore she tries to keep away from him

and tells him that they cannot be in any type of relationship. A person whose love is selfless and

not selfish cares for his/her loved ones or people whom he/she loves but cannot really love and

tries his/her level best to ensure that they do not get hurt by any means even if it is out of their

control. For Hazel Grace her desire to go to Amsterdam, even it is to risky for her, to ensure that

her parents are happy after she dies and resisting falling in love with Augustus Waters, even if
