A person suffering from cancer is a person suffering from the pain of not being able to
achieve something in his/her life and being a reason for the pain and grief in which he/she will
leave his/her loved ones in after his/her death and this reflects their selflessness. In John Green’s
novel “The Fault In Our Stars”, the author tries to show the truth about having cancer and the
impact of cancer on one’s view of the world as a whole. Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16 year old
girl suffering from cancer who is in search of what happens after the end of her favourite novel

Through all her actions and desires Hazel shows that she does not want to leave behind a
scar on the lives of people who reside in her heart without being selfish. The reason for “An
Imperial Affliction” being Hazel’s favourite book and the ultimate desire of Hazel to visit
Amsterdam was to know what would happen to Anna’s parents after her death, which was the
only way to ensure that her parents would be living a happy life even when she is dead. Hazel
does not want to fall in love with Augustus and to be very close to Augustus because she does
not want to leave him in pain as she is going to die and therefore she tries to keep away from him
and tells him that they cannot be in any type of relationship. A person whose love is selfless and
not selfish cares for his/her loved ones or people whom he/she loves but cannot really love and
tries his/her level best to ensure that they do not get hurt by any means even if it is out of their
control. For Hazel Grace her desire to go to Amsterdam, even it is to risky for her, to ensure that
her parents are happy after she dies and resisting falling in love with Augustus Waters, even if

Thyroid cancer is one of the main conflicts in John Green’s novel, The Fault in Our Stars. Hazel Grace, the protagonist, has papillary thyroid cancer that has metastasized to the lungs. Though most have a desire to leave earth and enter eternal life peacefully, without any sorrow, the departure of a loved one can be despondent. Previously in 2011, my grandfather passed away due to heart failure. It was an arduous battle, not only for my grandfather, but also for the close knit family surrounding him. His battle with heart failure enabled me to create unforgettable memories with him, even in his final days. Laughing together, playing together and learning significant values about life together made me grow to become a more mature and wise person. Therefore, my personal experience is entwined with empathy because the death of my grandfather has made me realize how dismal it is to lose someone important. Cancer patients often wonder if going through treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are worth the risk of the side effects, in addition to the cancerous side effects. They feel that they can’t enjoy or relax in what a short amount of time they have left because they are bedridden from the nausea and pain that treatments put them through. Patients tell their loved ones to just let them die so long as they don’t have to go through any more pain. Those who are too old, are unable to recover from the effects, or are just too far in the grips of cancer, should refuse the more harsh treatments like chemo and radiation. On the positive side, refusing treatments after a certain point can save their families from the stress and cost of hospital bills. If caught early enough, patients can opt for safer and easier routes to getting rid of cancer like surgery or by doing a stem cell transplant.

Augustus Waters always used to say, “The world is not a wish granting factory” (Green 214). In The Fault in Our Stars, both Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace Lancaster are dealt a far-from ideal situation for life. At the young age of thirteen, Hazel was diagnosed with nearly incurable stage four thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs. By some miracle, she survived; but, she does not thrive at all. In fact, she struggles severely, carrying around an oxygen tank wherever she goes, and even still she has to get fluid drained out of her lungs every so often. Gus, on the other hand, was diagnosed with 85% curable osteosarcoma and had to get his leg amputated. This ended his promising basketball career, and even still the cancer ended up taking more of his life; in fact the whole thing. Though Augustus and Hazel would have both wished for easier lives, sometimes what is real is not ideal; and in their case, what was real wasn’t even close to being ideal. As Augustus’s life came to an end, he always spoke about it being his personal dream to be remembered and not dying in vain. He is a drunk man, talking nonsense and criticize Hazel and Augustus by saying that, ‘like sick children.. you say you don’t want pity, but your very existence depends upon it’. Hazel felt disappointed and upset because she still can’t know the ending from the author himself. However, Peter Van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij Vligenthart, invited Hazel and Augustus to visit Anne Frank’s house in Amsterdam.
