The Crucible - Pride In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, both pride and excessive pride influence the characters throughout the play. Pride is a sense of one's dignity and worth. Excessive pride is being overly confident of one's own self worth. Throughout, pride influences the actions, reactions, and emotions of the characters in such ways to establish the outcome of the story. Three characters are impelled by their pride. Hale, who takes pride in his ability to detect witchcraft; Elizabeth Proctor, whose pride makes forgiving her husband difficult; Proctor, whose excessive pride causes him to overlook reality and the truth. Hale is an intellectual man who takes pride in his ability to detect witchcraft. He was called to Salem to analyze their situation. "This is a beloved errand for him; on being called here to ascertain witchcraft he felt the pride of one specialist whose unique knowledge has at least been publically called for." Hale takes this job to a personal level when the the crisis takes a turn for the worse. He pleads with the people convicted of witchcraft to confess. He feels he is responsible for their lives because his purpose was to rid the town of witchcraft, not innocent lives. He beholds himself a failure when he cannot convince the accused to confess. His well justified pride is broken. He came into this village like a bride groom to his beloved, bearing gifts of high religion; the very crowns of holy law I brought, and what I touched with my bright confidence, it died; and where I turned the eye of my great faith, blood flowed up. He urges Elizabeth not ot let her pride interfere with her duty as a wife, as it did with his own duty. Elizabeth Proctor is a bitter woman who has been hurt deeply by her husband and her pride adds more strain to the already unstable relationship. Her husband, Proctor, only wants her to find complete forgiveness in her heart and to put the incident behind her. She tells him, "...it come not that I should forgive you, if you'll not forgive yourself." She cannot grasp the fact he needs her forgiveness before he is able to forgive himself.
He is no longer enthusiastic and his attitude starts to change when he first came in the Proctor’s home. He was “drawn a little, and there is a quality of deference, even of guilt, about his manner now.” In first act, Hale was very energetic and excited, but at this point he seemed like he’s strained from guilt. He came with the mission to expel witchcraft, and the trails are supposed help with that, but he started to think that the witch trials are not the right way to go anymore. He started to realize that the trials are unfair and can ruin people’s lives and since he is a man of morals he starts to question the trials. When John Proctor came in and presented his case to the court, Hale tried to be rational and urged other to be so as well. He said to Danforth “stop here; send him home and let him come again with a lawyer.” Hale knows that the trials are unfair, so to prevent any more people from being hurt by the court, he wants the people to be represented with lawyers, so the process can be fair. The court wants to get rid of witchcraft, but Hale is the only one who thought about how it will affect the people being accused. As that trial continued, Hale exhibited courage because he left the court since no one wanted to change to things right. As he tries to talk to him, Danforth exclaims “I will have nothing from you Mr. Hale!” Now he was completely unvalued as a member of the court and
When you open up a book and read about the Lewis and Clark expedition, it is likely that you are going to read about a woman named Sacagawea. But who exactly is Sacagawea? In about 1788, Sacagawea was born in the Lemhi-River Valley in present day Idaho. For the following twelve years, she grew up as a Shoshone child. Although everyone got along with each other, every person in the community had a responsibility. Children were expected to work hard and taught from a very young age to be hospitable. They catered to absolutely everyone, and this was a well-known trait for most of the Shoshones. Most woman grew up and had children by the time they reached the age of twenty- such was the expectation of most Shoshone woman. However, at the age of twelve, Sacagawea, along with her brother, sister and mother were captured by the Hidatsa tribe. This tribe had the opposite reputation as the Shoshones, being known as cold people. The way Sacagawea, as well as many other young girls, does prove the accusation. Sacagawea became isolated in her new tribe, mainly due to her dreams of becoming more than just a mother.
" The fact that he only wants to please people is what gets him into trouble. He tries too hard to tell people only what they want to hear. This all results in Hale changing his mind about the court, the witches, and Salem.
likelihood of victory is small.” It is a person’s mental or moral strength to resist extreme
The Crucible reflects the theme of honor through the people who refused to admit they were witches. Self-worth is shown through the people who refused to say they were witches when they knew they were not. Proctor chose to die rather than lie and confess to something he knew was not true. Elizabeth also did not ask Proctor to lie and confess because she knew it would take the good out of him. Pride has been shown through Proctor. He committed lechery and still had faith in himself and said, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worthy the dust on the feet of them to hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (Miller 143). John Proctor decides that he would rather die with pride than lie. In The Crucible pride leads to the downfall of Salem, and the death many people. John Proctor, Elizabeth Proctor and Reverend Hale all experience the influence of pride. It eventually leads to Reverend Hale loosing his credibility, Elizabeth Proctor loosing her husband and John Proctor loosing his

He shows to be an intellectual, very knowledgeable, and states that he will get to the bottom of these witch-hunts that are poisoning the townspeople of Salem. In Act 1, Hale is shown that he is, in a way, very excited to show his ways off to the town of Salem and to free the Devil’s hold on the townspeople. He mainly relies on his and in them lie "... all the invisible world, caught defined, and calculated. In these books the Devil stands stripped of all his brute disguises. ... Have no fear now--we shall find him out if he has come among us, and he mean to crush him utterly if he has shown his face!" His drive to eliminate all presences of witchcraft in the town is
The minimum tipped wage has been the same for years and non-tipped has almost doubled over the years to today. Also the cost of living has went up 75% over the years and the servers are struggling to make ends meet on such a weak salary. Tips are a major part of a servers income and still sometimes it is not enough.
While his intentions start off pure and his confidence at an all-time high, the more we follow the character the more we realize that these things are slowly eroding. As he becomes progressively insecure with his actions, he becomes overwhelmed with others accusations which begin to take the place of his own assumptions and decisions. The character Abilgail sees Hale’s innocence and will to do good and achieve the unobtainable as a weakness within him. This gives her the opportunity to take his previece beliefs and transform them into a more extremist perspective. *Quote* While Hale doesn’t recongnize the manipulation nor the warping of his own perspective. He still believes that his action are those of innocent intent. Genuenly at this point in the play the reader has to recognize that in this moment in time Salem is in a crisis their worst fear has come to life and Hale is their only was of protection. So with all of these people depending on him he becomes insecure with his original ideas.
In Act II Hale, in his true moral values which do not change throughout the course of the play, goes to each house questioning the inhabitants on their loyalty to Christianity. He winds up at the Proctor home, where he questions both John and Elizabeth, who are angry at the reasoning of the questioning. They find out that he has questioned Rebecca Nurse as well and this anger...
The dining experience in America is a completely unique one. We all rely on our waiter or waitress when we go out to a sit down restaurant to take care of our needs. Many people do not realize the amount of work their server does for them in the hour they sit at that table, causing servers to be grossly under paid in comparison to other tipped professions. Server minimum wage should be raised because it is inconsistent payment, it is a poorly understood tradition, and it is a contributing factor in the stress levels of the servers.
The argument from the 2 letters "Server Wages Should Be Increased"&"Server Wages Cannot Be Increased", are comparing wages in New Mexico and the United States. Both letters has great information supporting both of their roles in the federal tipped minimum wage and non-tipped minimum wage.In my personal opinion; Server's who are paid tipped minimum wage are being under paid, as to those of non-tipped workers.
... in better shape today we would be making more than $7.25. But the value of a dollar is not worth what it once was. I believe that today minimum wage should be raised because everyone will need to have health insurance because it became a law in 2014.
Pride is often viewed as a positive characteristic. However, in the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller the protagonist’s, John Proctor, pride stands in his way making him a tragic hero.
Now a days, many believe that jazz is not that important of music genre, but with our history, jazz plays a big role. “Jazz does not belong to one race or culture, but it is a gift that America has given to the world.”, quoted by Ahmad Alaadeen. Jazz in the 1920’s opened the eyes of whites and invited them into African American culture; it evolved Americans to where we are today since it brought a change to the music scene, an acceptance of African Americans, and a change of lifestyles.
