Can society function without respect? In this era of political, social, and economic uncertainty, respect appears at first glance to be at an all-time low. However, respect can still be found in society, and if anything, has become essential in keeping a semblance of civilized behavior in society. Some would argue that respect in society has long since collapsed, that the leaders in this current era encourage their population to toss away the semblance of respect with their cold-hearted, cruel rhetoric. They argue that the world is too cruel and tough to show respect, that people must either kill or be killed in a world that remains unsympathetic to misery and unhappiness. They argue that humans will never respect each other, that each being must spend every aching hour of consciousness climbing ahead of others. They argue that respect and reverence, to the detriment of cynicism, has led to a weak and decadent society. They could not be farther from the truth. Respect holds together societies.
