Reflective Leadership: Insights from the Chiefs Petty Officer Academy

Chiefs Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) is an extremely effective tool to help refine leadership and understand one’s self. The CPOA course offers a vast opportunity for self reflection and learning how to communicate with a multitude of different personalities. There were a plethora of topics taught during the 5 week course; however the topics that had the greatest influence and inspiration for me personally were the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), Disc profile, and ropes course. As stated above, the LPI offered a unique opportunity to examine how I recognized myself as a supervisor and mentor. As a leader this survey glanced into how I saw myself; modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, challenging the process, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Equally important, it gave my supervisors, peers, and subordinates the same opportunity to give feedback from their perspective. A phrase often heard is, “You are your toughest critic”. This LPI survey validated that statement by showing me the differences in the scores of the aforementioned categories. Results from my survey revealed I …show more content…

Through a series of questions I found that I tend to be a conscientiousness type of person. A few of those personality traits are analytical, methodical and a perfectionist. I often times hold myself to a high standard when attempting to complete tasks and can result in having a difficult time starting projects due to the fact that I can become overwhelmed in the analyzing phase. Pairing up with someone who is a dominate trait, or has an influential trait can help someone move past the analyzing stage on projects. Consequentially, it can also possibly clash with these same individuals who just want to jump on the project right away and tackle obstacles as they come
