Bruno & Shmuel The boy in the essay that will be written about as a hero, will come from the movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Bruno is an eight year old boy whose family moved to Berlin for his father’s job transfer. The family moves into a residence home in Auschwitz, which is right in front of a concentration camp. Bruno’s oblivious when it comes to knowing what a concentration camp is. He has no idea what Shmuel, another eight year old boy, with missing teeth, a shaved head, and doesn’t shower every day, is doing over on the other side of a barbed wire gate. Bruno just thinks that all those men “working hard”, is just Bruno’s family. Shmuel looks up to Bruno as a hero for the many things Bruno has done for his friend. When Bruno and his family move to the residence, one day Bruno decides not to go to school and just to explore his back yard, which leads into a bunch of woods, but in the back of those woods is the concentration camp. When Bruno and Shmuel first meet, Shmuel is hiding behind a barrel watching Bruno eat his sandwich. He went on and on about how sorry he was and that he felt so bad that he lied to the solider about not knowing Shmuel. Shmuel forgave him and they became the best of friends again, on the opposite side of the gate of course. The last day Bruno goes to see Shmuel, Shmuel askes Bruno if he’d help find his father. To make sure Shmuel trusts Bruno again, Bruno says yes and gets “striped pajamas” from Shmuel. Bruno gets a cap to cover his full head of hair and they dig a hole that Bruno is able to go under, underneath the gate.
