I chose the film Brown Sugar to discuss the hidden messages that were displayed in the plot and the love the characters had for music and their black community. Brown Sugar reflects the importance of relationships that mirrored love and the strong culture within the black community. Dre and Sydney’s relationship for example suggest that they are in love even though they are both involved with other people. They learn how to survive with each other but at the same are not with each other. Music plays an important role and it shows how the characters lives grow throughout the film. Dre and Sydney's relationship has been something they have had since they were young children. Their relationship flourished when hip hop became involved. They both respect and understand the importance of hip hop and that is what keeps them so attached to each other. Their shared passion for music is what really separates them from the other couples in the film. Dre and his wife, Reese, do not know each other well enough because Reese does not care for hip hop. Sydney says multiple that hip hop changed her and it makes the black community stronger. Hip hop allows them to stay connected with their black roots and traditions while the lyrics represent the pride within their community. This allows the artists to use different view points for the audience to represent what they went through or know. At minute 47, Sydney and Dre are sitting on a park bench outside talking, Dre just explained to her that he quit his job and is unhappy with his life. They both begin to rap to each other and the mood lightens. This scene was a huge breakthrough for both of the characters, it brought them even closer. While rapping, it brought back memories from when they were kids and it made them both realize how happy they make each other. The park’s scene is peaceful which allowed them to open up to each other because the space around them let them feel
