The pit bull is a generic term that refers to the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, as well as mixed breeds and dogs with a similar look (Bickell). Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is a blanket term for various laws that are aimed to ban certain breeds of dogs because they are considered dangerous dogs. These laws are vastly ineffective as they discriminate towards breeds and dogs that simply look similar to the banned breed.
