Group #: 2 Student Name: Jackie Rivera Film Title: Boyz n the Hood Summary Boyz n the Hood (directed by John Singleton) is about a young man named Trey Styles who originally starts off living with his mother until he gets in trouble at school, so she forces him to live with his father in the inner city. The movie then fast forwards seven years later, Tre’s father (Furious) teaches Trey how to be a man as well as instilling in him how not to be a part of the vicious cycle of violence. In the movie Tre and his best friend Ricky are portrayed to be very clean cut (academically focused) while Ricky’s half brother, Doughboy and his friends are trouble makers. One night Tre and Ricky decide to go to a popular hangout spot, while they were standing around a gang walked by and bumped Ricky. In response to Ferris, Doughboy flashes his gun to the group to scare them off, but shortly after, Ferris and his crew then fired a round making everyone flee the scene in panic. The next day, Ricky and Doughboy get into a fight causing Ricky to leave with Tre to the store, on their way back Tre and Ricky spot Ferris and his crew and decide it would be best to split up. As they were fleeing in opposite directions, Ferris sees Ricky and shoots him just seconds after Doughboy arrived on scene. Feeling revengeful, Tre, Doughboy, and his crew decide to seek out Ferris to murder him, as they were on hunt for Ferris, Tre realizes that he is contributing to the cycle and decides to get out of the car and goes home. The movies from this genre are mostly debunkers portraying problems like drug abuse, racial discrimination with blacks, gang rapes, street gangs, hip hop music, Maras, shattered familial problems, illegal immigration, poverty and etc. Most of the films from this genre, typically have a very similar story line like “An urban Black youth facing problems either with poverty or immediate danger in the neighborhood.” This quality present in any movie depicts Hood Films.
Boyz N the Hood was a film created to convey an anti-gang message as well as to provide societal members an in-depth look at life in “the hood” so he or she can expand their culturally awareness of identifying societal issues (Stevenson, 1991). This is a movie based on three poverty stricken black males living in the lower class neighbourhood of South Central Los Angeles. Tre has a responsible father who is there to give him guidance while he is trying to further himself by going to college and a good student. Ricky a high school student is a great athlete using football to earn a scholarship as a way out while his brother Doughboy a gangster member, through symbolic interactions meets people, while dealing drugs, and indulging in criminal and violent behaviour including indulging in alcohol. This ridiculous song by Drake that keeps coming up in my English repertoire works WAY too coincidentally well with Two Feathers and Turkey Boy. I mean, just a quick overview of the song already solidifies that this is the modern thug version of the story. Going into a deeper analysis reveals more and more. I imagine that this would be from Two Feathers’ perspective after his triumph over the sorcerer. When he and Turkey Boy reached the village, he started from the bottom, then was given a chance by New Wife. After his victory, he had his whole team behind him every step of the way back to their homeland.

For most of his songs he talks about his life and how hard it is. In one of Eminem songs he tells a story about his family life and the song is called Mockingbird. A man who becomes a rapper and leaves his family behind but while he’s rapping all he could think about is his family. So how can someone love their family but leaves them so that they could rap. At this point the Mockingbird is about his family structure that created psychological issues.
Choices make people who they are, and often times, children who inhabit societies practically run by gangs make the mistake of joining one. Coolio captures this in his song with the lines, “I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the streets/ So I gotta be down with the hood team.” He portrays that once a person is in a gang, there is no escape. For example, the first verse is "You taught me everything and everything you're given me" and "You were there for me to love and care for me when skies were grey".
