Cub Scouts Teaches Valuable Lessons No Tiger is given his stripes, he must first earn them. All little boys who want to become Boy Scouts of America begin as Tigers, in a program called Cub Scouts. The Cub Scouting adventure presents endless personal and life lessons for little boys to begin understanding and implementing as they embark on the much larger adventure of becoming young men. Cub Scouts learn these lessons by believing and living by the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. The Scout Oath states: on my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; and to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Standing beside the Scout Oath is the Scout Law, which states: a Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. These promises instill early acknowledgements that the boys follow throughout their lives, from Scouting, to their place and responsibilities in the world around them. The most important lesson young Tigers learn as they begin their trail in Scouting is the Cub Scout Motto, do your best. This motto is a guiding principle and a rule for living, teaching young Tigers to always try their hardest, wherever they are. Learning the true meaning of the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, and the Cub Scout Motto are the stripes the boys earn to call themselves Tigers. Tigers begin their adventure in Cub Scouts with a parent partner, called their Akela, as a title of guidance, and a symbol of wisdom, authority, and leadership. This beginning partnership of parent and child produces the supportive teamwork needed to encourage a Scout’s full potential throughout his Scouting journey, and encourage the understanding needed to utilize what is being learned. Although parents are not required to be full-time partners after the boys move on from their Tiger rank, the further development of these close relationships never ceases because Scouting principles are reinforced wherever the boys go in their lives. From active family inclusion, young Scouts learn new roles and responsibilities within their family as a group, while receiving prideful recognition of their growth and achievements. Families are also a part of Pack meetings of every rank as a way to involve family units in learning activities that present new ways to interact with each other. The Cub Scout principles of family synergy will go on to be implemented in a Scout’s adulthood as strong, responsible members of society. Through the development of Scout’s relationship with Arthur Radley, Scout develops and becomes more empathetic. Atticus Finch, Scout’s father, is her most consistent role model and used by Lee as the moral compass. Atticus is a firm believer in teaching by example, and his respect of his children is such that he treats them almost as adults, emphasised in the line ‘he played with us, read with us, and treated us with courteous detachment’ pg. 6. Congratulations on your Eagle Scout! It takes a supportive and involved family to achieve that rank. Cole and I park cars at LSU home games and have met a few people from other troops, but so far, you are the first person we have met from Troop 65. Some adult men that I respect are Eagles and give their Boy Scout experience high praise for many life lessons. Hopefully, scouting will "balance" out Cole's life experience of being raised by women and give him practical life skills.
Imagine just two young kids maturing within a matter of years. Imagine that same two kids, experiencing or understanding things that they aren’t meant to at a young age. The way and rate that people mature at can be directly attributed to the values and beliefs of the society that surrounds an individual. It is undeniable that society’s perspective on many controversial issues will generally be adopted by the younger generations in a given society. Moreover, the exposure to significant events, coupled with the major influence of family members, can have an enormous impact on how an individual matures. Additionally, family members greatly help each other develop into moral adults by instilling in each other values that will ultimately determine an individual’s character. Life is full of lessons. The lessons you learn adjust and fit your character and who you are. In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, the characters of Jem and Scout are young, and have to figure life as they go. Jem and Scout witness and live through life lessons. They learn these lessons from others around them. Some lessons come from their town itself, while others come from people. Their father, Atticus, teaches them a lot about life and the right and wrong. Jem and Scout learn what it means to have empathy, courage, persistence and personal integrity. Because development happens this way, it can have many implications for teachers. There are multiple factors and processes that contribute to the variability of individual development of children, however, these differences can be overcome and teachers can give every child the support they need to achieve. Factors specific to the middle childhood years include vocabulary development, differing temperaments, development of attention, fine motor coordination, gross motor skills development and concrete operational development, including conservation, classification and seriation. Although they can create some disorder, these factors should not significantly hinder a child’s education, but teachers should adjust their lesson plans to accommodate all kinds of abilities, including physical abilities.
Stories are a big part of the human race. From conceptualizing the birth of our race to nagging our parents to tell bedtime stories, our life is nothing but a series of stories. It is in human nature to narrate significant incidents of our lives to others. Storytelling as a method has been progressively used by various companies as a tool to connect with their employees and customers. It helps to build a bridge of loyalty, longevity, mutual trust and understanding and connection. Storytelling helps to get that instant personal connect. Stories are significant because they are inherent to human experience. By stories we pass on our accumulated wisdom, beliefs and values to the future generations.
As young girl with big dreams I imagined my senior year of high school to be one of the best years of my life. I imagined going to homecoming with all of my friends, being the captain of the varsity soccer and cheerleading teams, going to Friday night football games, going to Prom with my perfect date, and going on a senior trip with all of my best friends. I never imagined my senior year to be the way that it is. I am the new kid.
Childhood is a time when significant events can and will leave impressions on oneself. It is not out of the ordinary that a large event will at least somewhat shape the mind of a child whether they realize it or not. One event that may have altered me somewhat was when I had to move from my old abode of Baileyton, Tennessee to Morristown to live with my grandparents. This was the result of my mother’s eventual passing after a losing battle with Cancer. Experiencing the “real world” so early may have changed how I think about and come to certain conclusions. I do not think this change in my life was necessarily a negative one, as I got to experience a lot of new things that I may have never had the chance to do. Sure, I had to grow up a bit earlier than your usual child, but I also probably reached a stage of maturity before most.
