The Bosnian Genocide happened on 1995 in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1991,
Yugoslavia broke the ethnic lines. The republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence in 1992 and the region became the main focus of fighting. The Serbs went after the Bosnian and Croatian civilians in a campaign that involved ethnic cleansing. They used former Yugoslavian military equipment, they surrounded Sarajevo. There troops hid in the hills and shot civilians as they were trying to get food and water. There were lots of executions, concentration camps, rape, and sexual violence. The “siege of Sarajevo” is known as one of the most important factors of Yugoslavia’s breakup, which involved thousands of people being killed over the years.

The United Nations tried to have six safe areas, which included Srebrenica and Sarajevo, but it did not happen. The peacekeepers did not have the power to protect the people who were looking for shelter and Sarajevo fell under the Serbs control. In July 1995, the Serb forces went to the town of Srebrenica and began bombing it. During this moment, they were only protected by 450 Dutch peacekeepers armed with not too much fuel and expired ammunition. Their force was so weak that the Dutch commander said that they were no longer military approved. The peacekeepers asked for support from the NATO, but they were denied. The Srebrenica fell to the Serbs in one day.
General Mladic, the head of Serb forces, kicked out 25,000 women and children from the town, while the Serb forces tried to hunt down 15,000 Bosniak men who had tried to escape to Bosnia. 3,000 men were killed during the escape. Very many Bosnians tried to find shelter at the United Nations base in Potocari, but were not there for very long. The Serb forces had found them in the afternoon and the next day, they were buses at Potocari to take them away. This separated the children and women from the men.
