There are many ways to get a point across or tell a story, but the ones that are mainly used are photographs and narratives. The differences between these two are in the details because they both tell a story. When you tell a story with a photograph you tend to add filters. Sometimes you even choose to capture only a certain part of the story with absolutely no context surrounding it. However, with a narrative you are able to go into complete detail, be it personal or factual, as well as be able to describe all of the story by also giving stories and examples. We see examples of this in the film “Born into Brothels” by Zana Briski and Susan Sontag’s “Regarding the Pain of Others.” Narrative is more important than image because it’s been shown that photographs lose their shock value, but a well narrated story will keep producing an emotional response no matter how many times is been told.
In Sontag’s “Regarding the Pain of Others” she states that in Canada they would have horrendous pictures of smokers lungs on cigarette boxes, this would completely disgust the buyer. However she also mentioned that this shock and disgust would only last a while and they would eventually go back to smoking. (62) Actually, I have seen these images floating around on social media Sites and they are usually photo shopped with pastel colors and glitter with the word “kawaii” which means cute in Japanese on the box; it seems that our current generation of smokers has become completely apathetic about our health. Compared to the gore, horror, the fictional situations and real situations on TV, a picture of yellow and rotting teeth won’t affect people anymore. Photographs are able to give many points of view as well but by changing the lighting it could seem to have been shot at a different time of day; change the angle and it could look like a completely different thing. Although these two combined would make a great story, photographs alone aren’t always enough or reliable; they could be taken out of context and misinterpreted by the public. Because the fact that photographs are easier and have many ways of being manipulated, they don’t really apply to the ethos, pathos and logos of a narrative, which is why a narrative is more important to a story.

To counteract the idea of disease and other negative aspects of tobacco, the industry used imagery in the media such as natural settings and healthy actors doing active things. This helps them to insinuate that smoking leads to success, romance, sophistication and other advancements in their lifestyle, which was easily imprinted in the minds of children. The multi-award winning documentary ‘Born Into Brothels’, directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman, acknowledges the lives of children who have unfortunately been trapped within the Red-Light district of Calcutta, India. This red-light district is recognized by the world as the second-largest red-light district in the world, containing several hundreds of multi-story brothels with an approximated 11,000 ‘sex workers’. Typically, as a high school student of Western Civil origin, I have not been subjected to this kind of raw violence and confronting and cramped living conditions. I recognized that my generalized emotion throughout the entirety of the documentary was sympathy directed toward the children who were outspokenly forced to endure
Photography may be seen as a helpful tool in recording history, history itself cannot be based on images. Susan Sontag author of “ Regarding the Pain of Others”, states:

The purpose of this essay is to integrate the photographic process with creative writing. At first glance, one might think that the two mediums do not have much common ground. However, upon further scrutiny, one quickly discovers that is not entirely the case. Photography plays a wide and diverse role in creative writing.
Tobacco companies started making collection cards, with photographs of models and baseball players, in cigarette packages to encourage new smokers. In 1964, the United States Surgeon General released a report stating that cigarette smoking was causing health hazards. As to American people that abused of cigarettes thought that consuming it wouldn’t cause any harm even when medical statistics were coming out to light. Smoking cigarettes has been part of American Culture for centuries and no body is about to stop this consumption because of several statistics. Many people that knew about this controversy didn’t know a way to stop it, only that it would continue to be part of an american’s life.
The instant we pick up a camera, the image has already been edited and the credibility of the photojournalist is already on the line. The ability and practice of people to be able to edit what goes into the composition of a photograph begins when they pick up a camera and even possibly when they decide to take a photograph of something. The work of a photojournalist is to relay images to the public via news sources in a way that gives people as much information about a topic as possible in the most neutral way possible. While no human being can be entirely objective about a given scenario it is the prerogative of the photojournalist to provide images that evoke the heart of a story without being manipulative to the viewer. This means that the photojournalist is responsible for the images he or she chooses and should be aware and sensitive to the effects that their image might have on those who view it. Of this issue of photographic ethics and credibility there are several key elements that should be acknowledged and considered. The first is the consideration and choice of the moment captured, another is the choice of framing and emphasis made on certain elements within the frame and the final involves the choices made in the process of editing.
There is an old saying “A picture is worth a thousand words” which is very true. In the article, "Against Neutrality", by Teju Cole mainly focuses on how a photograph can change a person perspective in an entire different way. Coles states, “The camera is an instrument of transformation”. A photographer has the power to create multiple different perspectives, which can be good and bad. It depends on the person who takes the picture and with the intent of the photo. A photographer is like a writer because they want to send some time of message to their audience.
There are a lot of ways to present the story which the author wants to share with the audience. It can be a book, a poem, a song, a music item, a film, a play, a dance, anything that the author may imagine. But each form is unique and one and the same story told using different forms will look different. Sometimes a bad story in verses may look perfect in a dance and vice versa. The form in which a story told is important, because it can highlight those important features, which another form may avoid.
Photographer - A good narrative needs good photographs capable of telling a story, photographers are not required full-time.
Second Hand Smoke In the 1950's and 60's scientists gave the people a lot of evidence on the deadly effects of smoking where the tobacco companies on the other hand tried to put the doubt in people’s minds through the campaigns to show that it is not all true. By the time people actually decided to take care of their health and finally saw how life-threatening smoking could be by real life examples, the tobacco companies already got rich from its sales. Nowadays, nobody doubts that “firsthand” smoke is deadly to your health and it causes lung cancer and heart disease in adults and asthma and bronchitis in children. Now the industry is onto the secondhand smoke. Scientists and researchers are representing a lot of evidence and research that has been done throughout the years showing that the secondhand smoke can also cause a lung cancer in nonsmokers. The study has been done of people who have been long exposed to secondhand smoke and it shows that 26 out of 33 published studies indicate a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. The study estimates that the people that were breathing secondhand smoke were 8 to 150 percent more likely to get lung cancer. The tobacco companies are trying to argue the facts and are still in serious debate about the health hazards of breathing a secondhand smoke. A lot of anti-smoking organizations are trying to turn smoking in public into a private activity that does not have to involve nonsmokers breathing secondhand smoke. What is even more important is that many of these organizations convinced a lot of smokers to cut back or quit completely. The problem of secondhand smoke is increasing because it is so common in our society. It makes secondhand smoke the third-ranking cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Mothers who live with a smoking spouse have to realize the ill effects of secondhand smoke on children even before they are born. The smoking components reach the developing fetus through the mother. Infants that are born in a smoking environment weigh less and have a weaker chance of becoming a fully developed child. Secondhand smoke leads to blood clots and damages arterial linings which are the two most leading factors in the development of heart disease. The tobacco companies got scared of the effect that the secondhand smoke research can do to the cigarette makers.
The use of multiple images to propel a narrative allows the audience to learn something through the characters that are there. Bloomer (1990)’s study on visual perception also draws upon Newton (1998)’s concern, as he explores the multiple perspectives and views of the event. By using a series of images, the characters mood and tone can be established throughout different elements of what we see. This may be the people, the place itself or the items within the place. By having a narrative of photographs, the audience has an even deeper understanding of the reality of that moment or event as they see more than just the ‘big picture’ as
Both film and pictorialism both evoke some sort of story or emotion out of its viewers. Also, some of the time, the pictures that were produced, may have helped make some of the films of that time. Having a good depiction of what was going on in the picture, filmmakers took some of these photos and turned them into a movie, whether it be a documentary or a film mostly made out of the blue for daily escape purposes. Straight photography couldn’t contain all the ideas about beauty that people might have, and that’s where film took over. Photographs and film doesn’t have to be flashy; they basically just have to tell a good enough story, or evoke a multitude of emotions, for the viewers to stay
