The Virgin of Guadalupe has become a formidable National icon in Mexico not only to Catholics but all Mexicans. She has become a unifying force for the people of that country. December 12 is the Feast day of our lady of Guadalupe and Mexicans all over the world regard it as a National day celebration.
One very interesting fact here is that the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe visited this land when much of it was still into paganism. They were not active devotees of the Blessed Lady so that one could say it was the figment of their imagination. The people never even knew of her but today she is the most adored creature throughout the country. Mary had already prophesied this when she said that “all ages will call me blessed.” If this is not enough to convince sceptics of the Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary I’m yet to think again of what would. Once anything is of God it stands the test of time. If a pagan people could convert and believe in God and have so much devotion to His Mother, then we have no reason to doubt that she is our mother also and she is working for us everywhere and every time.
The apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe was unique because she brought a message to a virgin land. Unlike in Portugal when she met the children saying the Rosary, here it was through a convert to a yet to be converted people. Her demand for a Church at the spot she appeared brings back the memory of Jacob who had a dream of angels ascending and descending a ladder and he placed a stone on the spot which later became a worship spot for the people.
