Life can be so shallow and fleeting, sometimes you need a tragedy to remind you of what is truly important in your life. Eight years ago, my cousin died after subjecting to severe asthma attack. I was so melancholy when thinking about all the life experiences that he will miss by being taken at such a young age, and what a loss this was for the whole of society to never know what merits and achievements he could have contributed, if given time. Breathe in the future, breathe out the past. I realised that the fact of his end is no longer a nightmare. However, my curiosity and thirst for more understanding in the field remain unsatisfied, and I know that I have to obtain a solid educational background upon which to consolidate my widespread knowledge as well as build my future practice. In my endeavor to be an outstanding doctoral scholar, I strongly believe that D.Phil. in Engineering Science programme in the University of Oxford will offer an ideal environment in which to test and strengthen my understanding of such discipline, while being a place where I could formulate engineering theories and principles, and contribute my new knowledge to the field of research and development in biomedical areas with the aim of improving quality and standards of healthcare. The reason for choosing the University of Oxford is its high reputation for producing eminent graduates, and being on the cutting edge of academic research in biomedical engineering. It has the essence to transform my aspiration into reality and consummates my keen dream of standing on the foremost front-line in my field of interest. Working with an international team of like-minded fellow students and professors, with ample space for enriching discussions, thoughtful reflections, and exchange experiences towards the development of innovative healthcare technologies and integrated approaches that …show more content…

My higher education career is marked by a strong grade point, and I have every intention of maintaining and indeed improving my performance in postgraduate study as I will now be able to devote all my effort to the sole subject of my interest – biomedical image analysis and processing on applications in pulmonary medicine. The theme of my research was chosen not solely based on my strong personal interest, ability, exposure and experience, but also on the direct and indirect merits that the outcome has on the society. Pulmonary diseases such as lung cancer, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represent a massive and growing global burden in society. It kills millions of people worldwide and has a great impact on the quality of life for patients as well as their families: COPD and asthma induced around 25 million sickness absence days per year in the UK. Yet current healthcare technologies such as spirometry and Computed Tomography (CT) remain inadequate to make significant
